Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the Borderland in the coming week.
UTEP Homecoming Football GameThe University of Texas at El Paso will celebrate Homecoming with a week of activities through Saturday, Sept. 26, including student events, alumni gatherings, a pep rally and other campus traditions. The celebration also includes the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner, which recognizes notable graduates. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center. Homecoming culminates with the Miners hosting Oregon State University at the Sun Bowl.
La Nube will turn Main Street into a free block party as part of Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play, featuring character meet-and-greets, hands-on STEAM activities, food trucks and community booths. Families can also take a chance at getting slimed during the outdoor celebration; regular admission is required to visit La Nube’s indoor exhibits.
The El Paso Museum of History will open a new exhibition — “Frontera Esoterica: An Insight into Curanderismo, Brujería, and Mysticism” — exploring the Paso del Norte region’s traditions of curanderismo, folk magic and spirituality through art, artifacts, herbs and other objects. The exhibition examines generations of regional practices and the history of midwifery while featuring work by artists including David Gremard Romero, Gustavo Marquez and Ome Tlaloc.
The El Paso Film Festival returns to Downtown El Paso with more than 80 independent films, screenings, panels and special events at venues throughout the Arts District. The three-day festival will also feature appearances by film industry guests including Academy Award-nominated editor Sandra Adair, actor Ellar Coltrane and filmmakers with ties to the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez region.
Opera UTEP will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with its annual concert featuring works by Hispanic composers. The program will feature singers from UTEP’s Opera Workshop class accompanied by pianist Esequiel Meza Jr. and is directed by Cherry Duke, UTEP’s director of opera.
A rescheduled National Dance Day will bring an evening of music and dancing to San Jacinto Plaza, with salsa, line dancing and music from a DJ. The free community celebration is presented in partnership with Destination El Paso, the city of El Paso and El Paso Parks and Recreation, and no dance experience is required. The event was originally scheduled Sept. 18, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
El Paso County Parks and Recreation invites families to spend a night under the stars at Ascarate Park, with nighttime fishing and a community campfire among the planned activities. Campers may arrive as early as 9 a.m. Saturday but must check in between 3 and 5 p.m., with the overnight event continuing until Sunday morning. Advance registration is required by Sept. 25.
Way Out West Fest returns to Downtown El Paso with a full day of country music, food and regional competitions celebrating Borderplex culture. The festival features headliner Cole Swindell, along with special guests Mike Ryan, Breland and Julia Cole. The local stage features Azucar, Down by Fore and others. Activities include the Chili Challenge, Quest for the Best Margarita Contest and other attractions highlighting the flavors and traditions of the region.
Celebrate archaeology with a family-friendly event offering hands-on activities that explore the region’s past. Visitors can learn about hunting during the Archaic period, participate in a museum scavenger hunt and uncover artifacts during a mock archaeological excavation.
Explore the Upper Sunset Trail in the Tom Mays Unit of Franklin Mountains State Park during this month’s Last Sunday Hike. The 1.5-mile, easy-to-moderate hike includes elevation changes, short steep sections and views from the ridgeline; participants should bring water, snacks and sturdy hiking shoes or boots.
The El Paso Public Library will bring its LibraryCon back to Downtown El Paso for a second year, inviting comic book fans, gamers, artists and readers to a free day of activities. This year’s “Borderland Heroes” event will feature a cosplay contest, crafts, exhibitors, vendors and workshops. LibraryCon will be preceded by two related events: the adults-only Villains Take the Night on Sept. 17 and an all-ages outdoor screening of “Blue Beetle” at Cleveland Square on Sept. 20.
Shakespeare on-the-Rocks will open its 35th season with an afternoon of tea and performances in the Botanical Gardens at Keystone Heritage Park. The Daughters of the British Empire will serve tea before actors from three local theater companies perform scenes from “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” “Twelfth Night,” “Macbeth” and “Richard III.”
R&B artists Usher and Chris Brown are scheduled to bring their co-headlining tour to El Paso later this year with a performance at Sun Bowl Stadium. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
Lucha libre stars Blue Demon Jr. and El Paso’s Cinta de Oro will headline Héroes del Futuro, a family-friendly professional wrestling event benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso. Presented by Cinta de Oro Promotions, the event will feature championship matches, women’s wrestling and tag-team competition, with proceeds supporting youth programs at the organization.
The Hal Marcus Art Foundation will celebrate its official launch with a dinner gala at the late El Paso artist’s home and mosaic garden. The evening will feature a plant-based dinner by Desert Bloom Catering and live entertainment presented by Sunset Parlor, with proceeds supporting efforts to preserve Marcus’ home and garden as a cultural museum, fund public art and mentor young Borderland artists.
The 15th annual Rocking the Rez Pow Wow will celebrate Native American culture and community with two days of traditional song, drumming and dance at Ysleta del Sur Pueblo. The weekend also will feature arts and crafts, food and other vendors, along with live entertainment.
El Paso Pro-Musica will present “Visions of Humanity and Unity,” a commissioned America 250 project featuring works by five composers inspired by the Declaration of Independence. The world premiere will feature the Arianna String Quartet, Grammy-winning cellist and EPPM Artistic Director Zuill Bailey and pianist Dominic Dousa, with the program also commemorating Beethoven’s 250th anniversary.
The inaugural Mission Trail Music Festival will celebrate the history, culture and communities of El Paso’s Mission Valley with live music, dance and cultural performances, local vendors, interactive activities and family-friendly entertainment. The festival stretches along the historic nine-mile Mission Trail, with activities planned at several locations and opportunities to visit area restaurants, shops, galleries and historic sites.
Downtown El Paso museums, cultural institutions and other organizations will stay open later for Third Thursdays, a monthly event encouraging visitors to explore the Downtown Arts District. Participating locations offer special programming and activities, while an artisan market features local vendors, live music, food and community organizations.
Party on the Plaza will close out its 2026 season with DJ Night at San Jacinto Plaza. Presented by GECU Federal Credit Union, the free outdoor concert series brings live music and DJs to Downtown El Paso on the third Thursday of each month from May through October.
The El Paso Symphony Orchestra will present “Heaven on Earth,” featuring works by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler under the direction of conductor Bohuslav Rattay. Soprano Meechot Marrero will join the orchestra for Strauss’ “Four Lieder” and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, with “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks” also on the program.
The El Paso Zoo will open after dark for its annual Brew at the Zoo, an age 21-and-older Halloween event featuring craft beer, food, live music and entertainment throughout the zoo. Costumes are encouraged, with VIP admission beginning an hour before the general event.
Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site will celebrate the area’s natural and cultural heritage with its 32nd annual Community Fair. The family-friendly weekend will feature educational exhibits, hands-on activities, local food vendors, guided rock climbing, pictograph tours and hikes through the park.
The ninth annual Día de los Muertos Desfile y Festival will transform El Paso’s Downtown Arts District into a daylong celebration honoring loved ones and Mexican traditions. The free event features arts and cultural activities, community altars, local vendors, live performances and a parade showcasing about 60 floats, performers and community organizations.
The Amigo Airsho returns to Biggs Army Airfield for two days of military and civilian aviation demonstrations, static aircraft displays and family activities. The 2026 lineup includes the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor Demo Team, U.S. Army Golden Knights and aerobatic pilot Kirby Chambliss, along with a kids zone, STEAM exhibits, food vendors and performances by the 1st Armored Division Band.
Families can celebrate Halloween at the El Paso Zoo during Boo at the Zoo, featuring candy stations, Halloween-themed inflatables and opportunities for children to explore the zoo in costume. The annual event offers a family-friendly Halloween experience alongside animals from the zoo’s Africa, Asia and Las Americas exhibits.
The Fourth Chihuahuan Desert Conference will bring researchers, conservationists and other participants to the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens for two days focused on the region’s wildlife, native plants, habitat preservation and restoration. The conference opens with an evening icebreaker Nov. 4, followed by presentations and sessions Nov. 5; registration also includes meals, refreshments and zoo admission on both days.
The Flying Horse race will return to Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino with four distances for runners and walkers of varying experience levels. Proceeds will benefit United Way of El Paso County and participating local nonprofits, and registered participants will receive a finisher’s medal and access to a post-race expo with refreshments and local vendors.
