One of the best things about the PNW, that space ,Late August to Early October, when my local Taphouse gets in the Fresh Hop beers.
Drinking FH Volatile Substance from Von Ebert this very moment.
I know it never took hold in other areas.
But a well done FH is a thing of wonder.
Any other places outside OR/WA doing this?
Two threads were started a week or so ago in the Great Lakes forum (MI & WI sources) asking for feedback for examples of any fresh/wet hop beers among brewers in the state. So far zero replies to these threads. Either the beers aren't ready yet, or brewers aren't doing them.
Leave it to @BBThunderbolt to extol the virtues of airplanes.Side note: I think username @P-51D is still available.
Early on my favorite local place would drive up to Maine and bring them back same day, with growth comes more resources. Last year, as well as the previous two, they used fresh hops from Crosby Farms in Oregon in their fresh hop beer. Last year it was a nice switch up, an English Mild with fresh Centennial hops.Words Unspoken (Fresh Hop English Pale Mild) - I find it ironic I then proceeded to ship it back to the PNW the first day it was available to a good beer friend in Washington, along with some other goodies of course
I forget the price on the four packs but it was not much more than their regular beers, which was nice.
Just from a logistical perspective it seems like a really hard beer to distribute widely. I reviewed this one in 2011 (when I knew a lot less about fresh-hop beers) and enjoyed it, but I have to wonder what I’d think if I had it again now. Ideally they’d put it in cans instead of 24oz bottles—as they did then—but I’ve basically ignored this one for years as we don’t need any more coal here in Newcastle. No idea how they’ve packaged it lately or what kind of distribution it’s seen.
If you're desperate...I was living in Morgantown WV for a few months in 2012/2013, and it was the only fh/wh beer I could find. Out of the bottle I thought it had a very slight green melon flavor, in what was a pretty malt forward ipa. It was better than nothing I thought at the time.
In April 2013 I moved to Eugene Oregon and the quality and quantity of my fh options increased exponentially.
I did try the SN northern hemisphere wet hop harvest ale out of the can a couple years ago. I thought it was OK, but without much fh character. I wouldn't order it again. My palate is now accustomed to fh beer from the PNW, and there's little that can compare to the better versions we have here.
About what I figured. I’ve been off my FH game this season but I have my reasons—and I think we are a few weeks behind Oregon anyway. Been checking your reports in the NWFH thread and it looks like you’ve enjoyed numerous trays thus far. It really is the most glorious beer season of them all if you happen to be in this part of the country.
