An affectingly reflective collection of autobiographical stories, Woven in Time by Ron Theel offers a kaleidoscope of perspectives on life’s biggest and smallest moments.
From nostalgia-heavy road trips through the dusty West to the heartbreaking reality of seeing your heroes falter, these anecdotal snapshots are intimate insights into the author’s life and mind. Whether he is curiously musing on the bizarre power of fingers, witnessing unseen details of the natural world, or reflecting on the struggles of artists and creatives, there is an earnest simplicity to the writing that is both endearing and compelling. The pieces are accompanied by atmospheric photography and scattered poetic verse, both of which set the mood for the longer stretches of prose that are observational and universal, yet undeniably personal.
In terms of structure and formatting, it feels unnecessary to have two anecdotes on the same page, as each chapter should be clearly defined and given space to breathe, particularly in such a short collection. The scope of each chapter is also somewhat uneven, with some stories more clipped and abrupt; pieces such as “Ice Wine” would benefit from further character development and context to fully bridge the gap between poetic thought and narrative expression.
Overall, however, this is a concise but potent collection, and an uplifting testament to the existential beauty of selfless acts, overlooked moments, and our perennial capacity to change.
