ReMix of Undertale (WIN) by jnWake. Original soundtrack by Toby Fox.
We'll never poo-poo a ReMix given as a Christmas gift, that's gotta be the coolest present ever! It makes total sense that judge jnWake would be able to whip up a badass Secret Santa present, after all, his productivity in Dwelling of Duels would give even the elves in Santa's workshop a run for their money, Wake's workflow is so efficient. :-) Wake explains his gift for giving, in this case his jazzy, energetic DoD-adjacent Undertale medley:
"A synth jazz-ish medley of themes related to the True Lab section from Undertale, particularly "Amalgam", "Here We Are", and "Alphys". A rare instance of a non-DoD competition submission from me! It does come from DoD though, just a different origin. See, on December there was a Secret Santa event held where people would ask for something, random assignments were made and then you had to make a gift (art/music/whatever, someone made an actual game) for your assigned person. In my case, I got to make RetroReboot's gift (who I believe hasn't ever submitted to OCR... something we should change), who asked for:
"Sonic, Undertale, or Pseudoregalia. You can pick anything from these sources and I'll probably love it, but if you want some (very optional!!!!) specific picks, Sonic Unleashed is my favorite Sonic game, and the True Lab from Undertale is pretty cool ("Amalgam" is one of my fav tracks)."
Luckily for me, the True Lab area from Undertale has probably my favorite tracks from the game. I've always loved "Amalgam" and "Here We Are", so I thought it'd be a fun idea to mix 'em up. "Here We Are" is characterized by some weird menacing chords and "Amalgam" from its funky rhythm (+ fun chords), so my first idea was to mix those 2. Eventually, I added parts from Alphys' theme for extra variety since it fit thematically and gave me more material to work with (plus, Undertale nerds know that the other 2 themes already reference Alphys' theme). Stylistically, I went for my usual synth/jazz approach since I felt it fit the sources well."
Not only did he go above and beyond with three sources instead of one, Wake was also kind enough to offer a quick arrangement breakdown. (Another gift?!? He's nice like that!):
"0:00-0:35: "Here We Are" chords in the style of "Amalgam" first, then in a slower beat for funsies.
0:36-1:15: Chords from "Amalgam" B section. First pretty straight then with a reimagined rhythm.
1:16-1:51: Chords from "Amalgam" A, now with a solo on top. Went for a mix of a polyphonic distorted lead and a regular mono lead to create a fun sound.
1:51-2:16: Alphys' theme.
2:17-2:39: "Here We Are" B section with a modified rhythm.
2:40-3:02: Reprise of "Amalgam" B with a variation.
3:03-3:25: This is the part that ends the loop of Alphys' theme.
3:26-end: Repetition of "Here We Are" to end the track."
This opens up sounding pretty (musically) dissonant, and that's pretty much a feature here with the quirky "Amalgam" as the base source. Nothing but beefy expansion of the themes, much like Wake's most recent Kirby's Dream Land 3 ReMix.
We had a sweet shift at 2:18 to "Here We Are" with a lot more tension before going brighter again at 2:40, especially from the warm energy of the string-esque sustains at 2:53, then the awesome brightness of the leads and countermelody at 3:03 joined in by the synth soloing at 3:13; excellent gradual escalation of things, then shifting back into the meaty beats at 3:26, then more tension and urgency from the final seconds at 3:37. That was all a run-on sentence because, dayum, this track doesn't let up, it just keeps it dialed up!
Get ready to feast on a fun amalgamation of this trio of sources, all of which I'd never heard arranged before; quite the nice change of pace for Undertale coverage. prophetik music effusively noted, "wake just keeps making the best thing i hear in any given week", so go ahead, make your day, week, month, year, maybe even make your decade! :-)
