Tang Contemporary has shuttered its branch in Hong Kong’s Wong Chuk Hang neighborhood as it faces accusations from multiple parties of nonpayment, the Art Newspaper reports. Among those seeking remuneration are the gallery’s landlord, its logistics provider, and several artists.

The announcement of the closure came on August 29, ten days after a legal notice was affixed to the gallery door alleging HK$1.57 million ($201,000) in outstanding rent, management fees, and interest owed to Grand Apex Ltd., the space’s landlord. The unpaid debt is said to have accrued between January 1 and August 31, and constitutes the amount owed following the seizure and auction of property from the premises, carried out earlier by a bailiff.

Also alleging funds owed are several artists who have exhibited with Tang. Among these are Shanghai-based artist Lin Fanglu, who says she is owed 160,000 yuan ($23,800) and eight of her works held by the gallery, and New York–based artist Li Nianxin, who says that she and artist Deng Shiqing are each owed roughly $10,000 each, as well as the return of six to eight works apiece.

Vivian Har, Tang’s Hong Kong director, told TAN that the gallery was working to pay off its debt and was making good with logistics provider Crozier, to whom it also owes funds, over a series of installments. Har additionally said that the gallery was working out payment plans with individual artist liaisons, though she offered no schedule for these.

“We had a number of good years, and when business was thriving, we always supported our artists—whether that meant producing catalogues for them or investing in media promotion for their exhibitions. As long as we had the budget, we tried to meet their requests,” she told TAN. “So now, when the situation is tough, I hope they can understand.”

Tang Contemporary was founded in Bangkok in 1997. Its outpost there remains operational, as do its locations in Beijing, Seoul, and Singapore and its branch in Hong Kong’s Central district.
