We are looking for a PhD researcher to join our research group at the Institute of Geography, Osnabrück University, for three years at 75% (TV-L E13), starting on 1 November 2026.

The position is part of the DFG-funded project MAVUNO – “Navigating Uncertainty in Multiple Crises: Tanzanian Agri-Food Chains across the Adaptation-Maladaptation Continuum”.

MAVUNO investigates how uncertainty in the context of multiple crises and hydro-climatic variability shapes the decisions of Tanzanian farmers. We are particularly interested in understanding under which conditions adaptation strategies contribute to resilience, sustainability, and equity, and when they may instead create or reinforce maladaptive outcomes.

The project is embedded in the new DFG Priority Programme SPP 2575 “Sustainability and Resilience of Agri-Food Chains in Times of multiple Crises?”, providing an excellent interdisciplinary research environment and opportunities for exchange and collaboration across institutions and disciplines.

The PhD researcher will conduct empirical fieldwork in Tanzania, analyse qualitative and quantitative data, and contribute to system and scenario analyses. We are particularly looking for candidates with a strong academic background in geography or a related discipline, experience with empirical social research, an interest in mixed-methods approaches, and a willingness to conduct several weeks of fieldwork in rural Tanzania.
