PM Pashinyan responds to Russian Security Council deputy chair Medvedev: And I could have said Armenia should not turn into a new Russia

Official meetings with the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan are not planned within the framework of the CIS summit in Turkmenistan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a press briefing on Thursday.

Pashinyan recalled that on Wednesday he had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and congratulated him on his birthday.

The Armenian prime minister added that he had meetings with Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about a month ago, and the format of the meeting in Turkmenistan assumes direct contact, so there will be contacts again.

"Officially, no meetings are planned," the Armenian premier clarified, but added that there have been cases in the past when, due to the need to discuss some issue, a decision was made on the spot to hold a meeting.

As for Russian Security Council deputy chairman Dmitry Medvedev’s recent statement that the biggest threat to Armenia is its “Ukrainization,” Pashinyan recalled the failure of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) to fulfill its alliance obligations to Armenia.

“I had the opportunity to work with and communicate with him [i.e. Medvedev]. But what are these criticisms and threats for now? By the same logic, I could have, or someone could have said that it is Armenia turning into a new Russia, considering that explosions are happening in Russia, etc. Armenia is Armenia, and Armenia will not turn into anything else. It will become an increasingly sovereign state,” the Armenian premier added.
