Future Trinity students could attend at a very low or no cost. The school is now offering free tuition and room and board for Hartford residents and half tuition for Connecticut residents from six counties.
“Coming from a low-income community, I know what it’s like to be around high education but not being able to afford it, so I think that it’s amazing students can afford it if you’re from here,” Trinity sophomore Nathaniel Hyndman said.
Trinity College’s tuition is $72,280 this school year and only increases when you add room, board, food, and other fees.
“There are thousands of students in our immediate space that would like to think of Trinity as an option,” Matt Hyde, with Trinity College, said.
Hyde said the college wanted to be more competitive with lower-cost and public colleges in Connecticut, when need-based tuition is no longer a factor for the student.
In these new initiatives, the amount needed for financial assistance isn’t considered, just the location.
“We want to keep our best in Hartford, and we know the cost is prohibitive,” Hyde said.
Although college tuition rises each year, this is the next private college in Connecticut to follow a trend of providing discounts to local students, like discounts for West Haven students at the University of New Haven and scholarships for Hamden residents at Quinnipiac.
“It’s an arms race with these institutions, and they’re all competing for the same pool of students. And it’s becoming more and more competitive out there. It’s becoming more and more difficult for these schools to estimate their yield,” Heath Grossman, with Johnson Brunetti Retirement & Investment Specialists, said.
Grossman, a Connecticut financial planner, said that nationally, college tuition is one of the most inflated costs over the past 20 years.
He encourages anyone applying to college to look for any and all scholarship opportunities or other deals that could lower the price and, as always, to work hard in the process.
“If they’re going to meet some degree of the need through some type of work-study or grant or loan type of program, the best students will be offered that. So work on your academics, be the best, most attractive student that you possibly can be. And so hopefully some deals will come your way,” Grossman explained.
The new discounts at Trinity do not apply retroactively.
