Seattle-area motorists are due for a struggle this weekend, when key highway segments will lose multiple lanes to late-summer roadwork.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that I-90 work planned for the weekend in Bellevue, and night-time slowdowns on I-405 in Bothell, have been postponed because of expected rain.
Seattle-area motorists are due for a struggle this weekend, when five highway segments, including parts of Interstate 5, will lose multiple lanes to late-summer roadwork.
The I-5 express lanes, on the lower deck of the Ship Canal Bridge, will close from 11 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday while workers install drainage pipes and maintenance hatches, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Therefore, drivers won’t have any I-5 option to bypass the choked upper bridge deck, where two northbound lanes are being repaved until December in the “Revive I-5” project. Expect traffic snarls to begin miles away at Beacon Hill.
I-90 eastbound entering Bellevue had been scheduled to lose two lanes from the Bellevue Way exit to Factoria Boulevard, along with ramps from both north- and southbound I-405 into eastbound I-90, but that job is being postponed by expected rain, state officials said Thursday afternoon.
Eastbound Highway 520’s offramp to Montlake Boulevard will close for a whole week, from 4:30 p.m. Saturday until 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. WSDOT will move equipment there, preparing for demolition of the previous offramp.
Northeast 85th Street in Kirkland and its Interstate 405 ramps close from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday for electrical work.
The Highway 99 First Avenue South bridge loses one northbound lane from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by closure of the left-side carpool lane from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
There’s also an overnight closure of westbound I-90, from Mercer Island to Seattle, for routine maintenance in the Mount Baker Tunnel from 10 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
On Sunday, a 2-mile stretch of Highway 167 in Fife opens between Highway 509 and I-5. Tolls on the new 167 segment begin in December.
Transit service across the region will operate normally, including Sound Transit’s light rail across Lake Washington every 10 minutes, south of downtown every 10 minutes, and from downtown to Lynnwood every five minutes, most of the weekend.
The Huskies will host Utah State in a football game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, as Sound Transit aims to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s train stall north of U District Station, which blocked crowds leaving the Apple Cup game. Sound Transit has not issued a detailed report, but considers it a mechanical problem in one train, a spokesperson said.
