Munich-based streetwear brand BSTN has teamed up with plenty of footwear icons since its 2013 debut, including Adidas, New Balance, Puma and Mizuno. But until now, it’s never crossed paths with Salomon.
This week, the two firms collide for the first time for an unusually Y2K-inspired take on Salomon’s hottest trail runner.
Salomon’s XT-6 almost disappeared before helping define the gorpcore movement. Now, it lands in arguably its most Y2K-looking version yet.BSTNThe XT-6’s second lifeBelieve it or not, one of the most defining silhouettes of the gorpcore era was nearly forgotten about.
Salomon’s XT-6 might be a household name among streetwear enthusiasts, but the 2013 trail runner almost disappeared. Developed by the company’s elite S/LAB division, with input from professional ultradistance runners, the original shoe was popular for its lightweight construction, secure fit and dependable grip over technically challenging courses.
Nevertheless, the trail running category was booming, and evolving fast by the middle of the decade. As lighter, more advanced trail shoes became available, the XT-6 gradually lost its place in Salomon’s lineup.
For the task, Salomon collabs with Munich-based streetwear brand BSTN for the first time.BSTNBut the brand didn’t give up.
Salomon’s special projects manager Jean-Philippe Lalonde recognized the shoe’s potential beyond trail running. Its angular overlays, distinctive proportions and overtly technical styling were perfect for the burgeoning culture of functional outdoor gear worn in everyday fashion.
The XT-6 was reintroduced as a lifestyle shoe in 2018, helping spark the gorpcore movement. And when GQ named it the “Sneaker of the Year,” it confirmed the silhouette was here to stay.
The “5 AM” variant is inspired by “the quiet hour between night and day,” with color-shifting uppers.BSTNThe new iteration of the XT-6 is called “5 AM,” and it’s inspired by “the quiet hour between night and day.”
Structurally, the shoe remains the same as a typical modern version. You still get an abrasion-resistant TPU upper, an AgileChassis system underfoot for stability and comfort, a highly capable Mud Contragrip outsole and, most importantly, Salomon’s signature Quicklace setup.
The iridescent overlays evoke Y2K-era apparel and accessories, which is a rarity for these trail runners.BSTN
The sunrise inspiration is driven home with the insole, featuring a gradient purple-to-orange color.BSTNThe biggest changes are cosmetic. An iridescent overlay brings a fresh look to the classic silhouette. Shifting color depending on the light, it inadvertently evokes memories of Y2K-era apparel and accessories. The XT-6 doesn’t typically lean into those aesthetics, so this is a rarity.
Aside from the colors, the biggest change here is the zig-zag stitching on the tongue and lace loops.BSTNThe sunrise motif is really driven home by the insole, which shows a gradient shift from purple to orange. Aside from the color scheme, the only addition to the shoe is the contrast zig-zag stitching added to the tongue and lace loops.
The XT-6 “5 AM” Iridescent drops on October 10 at 10 a.m. Central European Time, exclusively from BSTN’s website. However, if you happen to be in either Munich or Hamburg on October 9, you can get early access from BSTN’s flagship stores.
It’s priced at $300, which is notably higher than the shoe’s standard $185 price tag.
