In an all to familiar scene these days in Georgia, another brewery is shutting down. Akademia Brewing Co. (2016). In Athens, GA will be closed by the end of June. I used to meet my daughter there when she was at UGA. They made some good beers: Hoprodisiac IPA, IQ IPA, Skål, The Dom Kölsch, Altered Minds Altbier, etc. Very much overshadowed by Creature Comforts but they filled a different niche, at least for a time. Sad to see it go. Really sad to see Skål Norweigan Pale Ale go, a stand out among PA.

That is a loss. They certainly brewed across the spectrum without limiting themselves to the flavor of the day. Loved Extra Credit, their ESB.

I enjoyed Extra Credit too. Solid take on the style. Like a lot of breweries, IPAs and BA stouts were some of their more popular beers, but not necessarily their best ones. Skål was the first beer in GA I had heard of using the kviek yeast. For the IPA fans, ParalIax Project II IIPA was a great change of pace, using Loral and Enigma hops. You got the tropical fruit notes that many like along with enough spiciness to balance those aromas and flavors. I knew something was probably up when I saw that it and Hoprodisiac was not being restocked a few months back.
