Deforestation in the Amazon has halved in the past few years
In my book (published at the start of this year), I included this chart of deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon since the 1980s. I also wrote about it on my Substack.
Deforestation rates had doubled under Jair Bolsonaro, and things were looking bleak. But at the time of writing, Lula da Silva had just been re-elected and I said that this should give us some hope of a turnaround.

Coal has died in its birthplace: UK closes the last coal power station
But in the last few decades, coal use in Britain has tanked, and its journey towards a coal-free grid ends today as it closes its final power plant: Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
The decline in coal power has been pretty rapid. Here it is as a share of electricity. Or you can find total production data here.
I was in England in the early 1970s, after the end of burning soft coal, when public buildings were being sandblasted all over the country to reveal the original stones, whether marble, sandstone, or whatever. The smogs had gone away, too. Now, as we have seen in these posts, the entire UK is well on its way to discarding Fossil Foolishness completely. Maybe nukes, too. Fantasy writer Terry Pratchett had once worked as a publicist in the British nuclear power industry. He said that he couldn’t write about his experiences, which were too unbelievable.
The title above is wrong, of course. Coal is seriously prehistoric. But coal as the foundation of the Industrial Revolution was indeed British, along with steam engines.
New York Climate Activists show path forward
On the evening of Dec. 10, 12 self-identified elder climate activists sat around the Christmas tree in the New York State Capitol, in Albany, singing carols as they waited to be arrested. The protesters, who were there to support New York’s Climate Change Superfund Act, had been told by police they would face criminal misdemeanor trespass charges if they stayed put.
“Normally, for a protest like this, we’d expect to be written a citation rather than charged with a misdemeanor,” said Michael Richardson of Third Act Upstate New York, which helped plan the civil disobedience. “But there were enough of us ready to take the elevated charges. We knew it would have fewer consequences for us than a younger person.”
The next evening, another seven elders gathered around the Christmas tree in expectation of being arrested. Protests continued into a third day, dramatically capping off a campaign that had worked for two years to pass a state law making fossil fuel companies pay for damage caused by an escalating climate crisis.
On Dec. 26, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul bowed to the activists’ demands by signing the Climate Change Superfund Act, which will force fossil fuel companies to pay an estimated $75 billion over 25 years into a fund for addressing the impacts of climate change.
“This legislation is about getting resources to people in need,” said Jamie Henn of Fossil Free Media. “We’re already seeing states and municipalities drain their budgets as they try to respond to increasingly expensive extreme weather disasters. This bill helps fill those gaps while pointing a finger at the corporations who are most responsible.”

Green Microgrids Are Powering a More Resilient Future

In December of 2022, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California, destroying homes, damaging infrastructure, killing two people and leaving tens of thousands of households and businesses without electricity.
Typically, when power goes out in America, diesel generators come on to provide ad-hoc, dirty and expensive electricity while the grid is down. But that’s not what happened on the reservation of the Blue Lake Rancheria, a tribe comprising Wiyot, Yurok and Hupa Indians, after the quake. The reservation had a different solution. They simply turned on the grid — that is, their own.
A microgrid is a small-scale energy system that can operate either independently or as part of the larger electric grid. Microgrids consist of generation devices along with management systems that control voltage and distribution of power. Their technology allows for cleaner, more efficient and more reliable power to buildings and communities in the event of greater grid failures. And with climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, such resilience is increasingly important….

Stargate will use solar and batteries to power $100B AI venture
The renewable power installations will be built by SoftBank-backed SB Energy, according to a report from Bloomberg, though they’re unlikely to be the venture’s sole source of energy.
The growth in cloud computing and AI in recent years has sent developers and tech companies scurrying to secure power. The U.S. Department of Energy expects that data centers could consume as much as 12% of all power produced in the U.S. by 2028, up from 4.4% in 2023. The looming crunch could leave 50% of new data centers underpowered by 2027.
Unfortunately techbros who know something about software are often clueless about renewable energy.
Nuclear power has emerged as a darling of data center developers and tech companies. Google signed a 500-megawatt deal with nuclear startup Kairos, and Microsoft is restarting one of the shuttered reactors at Three Mile Island. Data center operator Switch announced an agreement in December with Oklo, the Sam Altman-backed small modular reactor company, for 12 gigawatts of capacity.

We’ve resumed the fight against illegal mining, illegal logging, illegal hunting, illegal fishing and animal trafficking.
we resumed the fight against deforestation, and the numbers came in. At first, only in the Amazon, but now
we believe we’ve managed to reduce deforestation throughout Brazil.
We have a bold goal, which is zero deforestation by 2030, but I want to get there sooner. And we want to achieve as much as possible. When we reach the goal, we double the goal
It’s because we’re in a hurry.
