Hayley Shaher's family were told she might not make it through the night after a catastrophic stoke - but after months of determination the Teesside woman is now focused on helping others.
In June last year, just weeks after her 50th birthday, Hayley got the devastating news she had a brain aneurysm. In October she was due to have surgery on it at James Cook Hospital when she suffered a bleed on the brain which resulted in the stroke.
The former estate agent, said: "My family were informed it was touch and go whether I would make it through the night but I did."
In November Hayley, who lives in Ingleby Barwick with husband, Nasser, 56, and son, Amir, 21, was moved to North Tees Hospital, ward 41, where she began a gruelling process to start getting her life back.
She said: "At that time I was unable to sit up and was manoeuvred using a hoist. By December I could stand with assistance and on the December 22 my gift to my amazing husband for his birthday was a hug from me whilst standing without assistance.

"I thought this was as good as my life was going to be. Through it all the team of ward 41 kept my spirits high even on my lowest days by the beginning of February I was taking a few tentative steps with a lot of help. Physio was brutal at times and hilarious at others. But no matter what I showed up everyday. I never refused as I knew it was that what was going to get me better.
"Everyday I had my amazing family and fabulous friends cheering me on, listening to me cry and encouraging me every step of the way. I have fought harder than I knew I could, I had to accept that my life as it was has gone, but now I have a second chance at life to embrace what is truly important, time spent with loved ones."
Hayley said she began to realise that the hospital teams helping her were in need, so she decided to raise funds for them and has currently raised more than £5,400.

Hayley said: "I’m not going to stop there, they desperately need supplies of all types of toiletries, fans for patient use and the family room is in dire need of a makeover so those are my next goals. I’m a firm believer in giving back and the angels of ward 41 deserve all that I can do for them."
After 23 weeks Hayley managed to walk out of hospital. She said: "I’m far from fixed and I still have a long road ahead of me but I will get there."
Once she was home the mum-of-one started to realise how isolating it can be for people in her situation. She reached out to other stroke survivors and has now set up a support group where they can meet for coffee and a chat.
The first meeting of Stroke Survivor Support Group, took place on Monday, June 29, at Stockton's Queen Campus Sports Centre and will continue to be held fortnightly at 11am.

Hayley said: "We were delighted to have 14 people in attendance at our first session and are hoping for more at our next one. The ages ranged from 22 years up over. The feedback from everyone was that it was really beneficial and that it was a great opportunity to be heard and have your thoughts and feelings validated by others going through a similar journey.
"The group is supported by the amazing community stroke team who will occasionally pop in to have a chat with us and we are hoping other specialist stroke companies will offer their time."
Hayley is still fundraising for Ward 41 and anyone who would like to help can visit her funding page here.
