While the free tier of the Gemini app allows you to be quite productive, subscribing to Google AI Plus or AI Pro unlocks a lot more.
In May, the Gemini app switched to compute-based usage limits. Free users get “Standard limits” that you can keep track of at gemini.google.com/usage.
These limits factor in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit.
With AI Plus ($4.99 per month in the US), you get “2x higher than standard limits.” AI Pro ($19.99/month) bumps that to “4x higher than standard limits.”
Another important consideration is the context window:
When you upload files to Gemini Apps, it needs to ‘read’ the content to provide useful insights or answers. The context window is like the reading capacity. It determines how much content can be understood together at one time.
Free accounts are limited to 32,000 tokens or “around 50 pages of text.” AI Plus brings that up to 128,000 tokens, while AI Pro gives you 1 million tokens or 1,500 pages of text (30,000 lines of code).
This also has an impact on file uploads. Free users can only upload videos that are up to 5 minutes in length versus 1 hour with AI Pro. Similarly, audio goes from 10 minutes on the free tier to 3 hours. Uploading code is also restricted to a subscription.
Notebooks let you organize projects (trips, exam prep, etc.) and chats with direct NotebookLM integration. Free users can have 100 notebooks with each supporting up to 50 sources. AI Plus doubles that to 200 notebooks with 100 sources each, while AI Pro brings that to 500 notebooks and 300 sources.

Earlier this year, Gemini made Personal Intelligence’s Memory available to all users. This joins Instructions for Gemini (customize all responses without having to specify every prompt) and Connected Apps.

Announced in May, Daily brief provides proactive and personalized updates every morning. Google AI Plus is required.

As a free user, you can generate images with Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image). Subscribers get access to Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) to “redo” generations with the more advanced model.
Video generation with Gemini Omni for conversational editing requires Google AI Plus or AI Pro.
Scheduled actions are prompts that automatically run at a time or condition of your choosing. This capability is only available for subscribers with a limit of 10 actions at a time. It can be used for:
