A former Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmania Tigers cricketer faces being jailed for sexually abusing a teenage girl he met when he was a player.

Aaron William Summers in late June changed his plea to guilty on two counts of penetrative sexual abuse of a child and grooming with the intent of exposing a child to indecent material.

The offences occurred in Hobart on January 16, 2018 when the fast bowler was on the Hurricanes roster.

Summers met the 15-year-old girl after messaging her on social media and picked her up near her house before driving to a local school where he abused her.

Summers' lawyer Caroline Graves told the Supreme Court of Tasmania the offending occurred at a 'difficult time' for her client, when he was socially isolated and using social media heavily.

He had since developed insight into his crimes and was a low risk of reoffending, she said on Thursday.

'This offending will never go away from his mind but he does need to get on with his life,' Ms Graves said.

'At the time of the offending, he was one of the fastest bowlers in the world and that is why he was being identified to play internationally.

'He knows he will never progress into professional cricket in Australia or overseas.'

Summers played one game for the Hobart Hurricanes in late 2017 and three one-day games for Tasmania after debuting in 2018.

Ms Graves said Summers also played overseas on short contracts and was looking at a stint in English domestic cricket.

Summers was arrested and extradited from the Northern Territory to Tasmania in 2025 after serving jail time for different child sex offences.

He pleaded guilty in 2021 in the Northern Territory to charges including possessing and transmitting child abuse material.

Ms Graves said a wholly suspended sentence should be considered, but Justice Helen Wood said that wasn't an option.

Summers, who had been on bail, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in August.
