Veteran documentarian Louis Theroux has named the documentary he is most proud of.
Louis has been making documentaries for the BBC for almost 30 years and this year he released his latest work — Inside the Manosphere — on Netflix.
And he has now opened up about his renowned career with UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall for his The Inner Game podcast.
In it, Tom told Louis he had watched every single one of his documentaries, before he was asked about the one he was most proud of.
And in reply, Louis said: “Well, my son asked me the other day, unusually, because it's not like they’re always talking to me about my career and stuff. He was like, ‘What do you think is your best documentary?”
Louis said the Manosphere was streaming at the time and he told his son: “I said, well I don’t really like to say, but probably one I did called The Most Hated Family in America.”
Tom then explained that it was a three-part series before Louis added that it was originally meant to be a one off in 2007 — before he later returned to film two more seasons.
His documentary, which is now streaming on BBC iPlayer, highlights his visit to the family-run Westboro Baptist church in Kansas.
Their homophobic members would picket funerals of dead soldiers and Louis was granted some truly shocking access to some of the most memorable people he has ever interviewed.
And remembering it, he said: “The first one in particular, for various reasons, I do think, I’m particularly proud of that one.”
He continued: “I think that one, you know someone who didn’t know who I was, no history with me, they could watch that and be like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s really good.’ I can sort of hold that and go like, ‘Yeah, that’s really good.’”
Giving Tom’s audience and insight into the backstory, he said: “We should say the Westboro Baptist church was a cult-like religious group in Kansas led by a guy called Fred Phelps.
“There's about a hundred of them and they believed that it was their duty to picket funerals, concerts, mainly the funerals of dead soldiers with homophobic placards that used offensive terms saying ‘Thank God for dead soldiers’ and then the idea of just that the deaths of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan were God’s punishment for an America that was overly tolerant of homosexuality.”
Louis added: “I encourage people to watch it obviously. But truthfully the paradox is that behind-the-scenes they were very welcoming.”
He explained that the reason he was granted access was that part of their prophecy was that everyone in the world needed to hear their message in order for Jesus to return.
Speaking about their hospitality away from the cameras, he added: “So they were like, ‘We know you hate us and God hates you because you’re hellbound sinners, but while you’re here, would you like a cup of? Would you like some lemonade? Please come in, sit down.’
“They were very civil and highly educated.”
He insisted that they were “so friendly” and that documentaries are more difficult when the person he is interviewing believes the film is going to be more positive than it is — or they are sensitive about criticism.
