North Wales Live readers have been debating the use of mobile speed cameras, which will be deployed on roads throughout North Wales this week as part of the GoSafe initiative. The objective is to reduce speeding and lower collision rates.

Readers expressed firm opinions, with some supporting the enforcement while others demanded modifications to the methods and locations employed. GoSafe, Wales' road casualty reduction partnership, operates clearly marked vans and motorcycles.

Locations have been identified this month across all six North Wales counties - ranging from more than 50 in Flintshire to nine in Conwy county.

The vehicles are staffed by fully-trained police personnel or police officers who monitor the speed of passing vehicles.

When they determine that a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, they use equipment to record it – frequently leading to prosecution. A device called a speedscope can be directed at vehicles up to 1,000m away, although most operations are conducted far closer, GoSafe has said.

The time, date, speed, distance, site coding, and whether the vehicle is travelling towards or away from the checkpoint is recorded on the image to produce to the offending driver. The partnership publishes the precise locations of the mobile cameras on its website for public viewing.

While Anoldgit writes: "Same places as usual, cars, lorries, buses, tractors, and motorbikes all totally ignore the speed limit in Newbrough, Anglesey, because you are never there."

Funnel agrees: "Yes, same old…they’ve no common sense. I’ve promised myself that next time I see a Go Safe vehicle, I’ll stop with them to ask if they’d mind coming to where I live and see for themselves instead of staying in their comfort zones."

ThePickledLiver replies: "The fact that we have upper limits tells you everything about the quality of the 'judgement of individuals'. There are drivers on the roads who shouldn't be allowed past their own front door, on foot."

Indigodebz says: "Love to but signage often obscured by overgrown hedges, 20mph zones have no repeater or reminder signs as in England and are often on roads that don’t look like they would be 20mph."

Richthebass comments: "And once again, sitting on the Llay Rd overpass on the A483, where it's straight, clear and safe? Less than 5% of RTAs (and even fewer fatalities) occur on dual carriageways and motorways, so why not go and munch doughnuts near an infant's school, or on a statistically much more dangerous A-road?? No wonder people are cynical about police and 'Go Safe' initiatives like this."
