Summer is finally here – and if you've been putting off your Botox refresh because you're worried about how it will fare during the hot weather, doctors are finally putting the myth to bed.

In the beauty world, there have been rumors swirling for years that getting cosmetic injections in the summer can cause it to melt as many people falsely believe that the injection breaks down in the heat.

On TikTok, the myth has been spreading like wildfire too with users claiming that their Botox was ruined after spending time outside.

But according to doctors, it is simply not true.

'Hot weather itself does not change how Botox works once it has been properly injected,' board–certified dermatologist Dr Melanie Palm told the Daily Mail.

'Botox and other neuromodulators work at the neuromuscular junction, where they temporarily quiet the muscle activity that creates dynamic lines,' she said.

'The outside temperature is not going to 'melt' the product or make it behave differently in the skin.'

Board–certified plastic surgeon Dr Rian Maercks of the Miami's Maercks Institute agreed.

'The toxin itself is placed into the muscle and begins binding to nerve endings within hours. Once it's there, normal outdoor temperatures don't "melt" it or deactivate it,' Dr Maercks told the Daily Mail.

'The bigger issue is that people tend to be more physically active during the summer,' he shared.

'Increased exercise, travel, outdoor activities, and sun exposure may indirectly influence how patients perceive their results, but heat itself is not reducing Botox effectiveness.'

For those who may be unfamiliar, Botox, short for 'botulinum toxin,' is an injection made from neurotoxins.

It works to weaken the muscles in the face or other parts of the body, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Not only can it be used to smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but it can also be used to treat migraines and other plights – and it is incredibly common in Hollywood, with stars like Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen confessing to the injections.

Oftentimes, patients get injections every three to four months, which means that it's something that is done year–round.

However, there may be one benefit to getting the injections around the summer months.

'One interesting thing patients may notice in warmer months is actually less sweating in the treated areas,' Dr Palm told the Daily Mail.

'Botox and other neuromodulators can reduce activity in eccrine glands, which are the sweat glands responsible for sweat production,' the doctor shared.

'So patients may be pleasantly surprised that they have less sweating on the forehead or other treated areas of the face during hot weather,' she said.

The doctor added that some patients like to schedule their treatments around big events like weddings, vacations or the holidays.

'Summer can actually be a very reasonable time to treat, particularly for patients who notice they are squinting more in bright sun or who appreciate the added benefit of less sweating in treated areas like the forehead,' she said.

But like any other cosmetic treatment, there are important aftercare precautions to take – and some of them do include avoiding activities like sweating in a sauna or going to a hot yoga class.

'I recommend patients skip strenuous workouts, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged direct sun exposure that day,' Dr Palm said.

'I also tell them not to rub or massage the treated area, and to be gentle if they are applying skincare or makeup,' she said.

'Patients can still go about their day, but I would keep it low–key: stay cool, hydrate, wear a broad–spectrum sunscreen, and avoid anything that causes significant flushing or sweating right after the appointment,' she said.

Dr Maercks also added that for the first several hours after treatment, patients should avoid bending over or doing any activity that 'substantially increases blood flow to the face.'

Like Dr Palm, he also recommends staying out of the saunas or going for a hot workout.

'This isn't because heat destroys Botox, but because excessive vasodilation immediately after treatment may increase swelling or bruising,' he said.

However, at the end of the day, it's important to keep in mind that Botox isn't the ultimate fix for facial aging.

'It is an excellent treatment for dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle activity, but it does not lift descended tissues or restore facial structure,' Dr Maercks said.

'Patients often expect Botox to correct changes that are actually caused by ligament laxity, volume descent, and structural aging,' he said.

'Understanding that distinction leads to much happier patients and more natural long–term outcomes.'
