As heavy rain continues to lash parts of Maharashtra and Belagavi district, water levels in the Krishna and its tributaries are rising.

As many as nine bridge-cum-barrages are submerged in the waters of various rivers and streams in Belagavi district. Commuters are using alternative routes.

Water discharge from Maharashtra’s reservoirs into the Krishna and other rivers crossed 1,07,028 cusecs (9.2 tmcft) on Tuesday. This is around 22,520 cusecs more than that was released on Monday. Officials in Belagavi said that there is no chance of flooding till water discharge reaches around two lakh cusecs.

The Koyna dam in Maharashtra is receiving an average inflow of 93,020 cusecs of water, while the outflow remains zero.

Inflow into the Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir on the Krishna in Almatti increased to 21,448 cusecs. The dam has 22.4 tmcft of water, around 17% of the gross capacity of 123 tmcft.

“We have kept the outflow at 545 cusecs as the authorities want to impound the maximum amount of water,” irrigation officers said.

Hippargi barrage recorded an inflow of 77,100 cusecs, while the outflow was 75,500 cusecs.

Inflow at the Raja Lakhamagouda reservoir was recorded at 21,730 cusecs and the outflow was 107 cusecs. The dam has 10.9 tmcft of water against the total capacity of 51 tmcft.

Due to heavy rain in Khanapur and surrounding areas, water levels in the Malaprabha have begun to rise. The Anjaneya temple in Habbanatti is nearly submerged in river water, with only the roof visible from the road.

The Renuka Sagar dam on the Malaprabha river near Munavalli recorded an inflow of 4,082 cusecs, while the outflow was 194 cusecs.
