A woman died after being attacked by an Indian gaur at Hirebail in Kalasa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district on Tuesday.

Susheela, 52, encountered the wild animal in her plantation while working in the field with her husband. She sustained serious injuries in the attack. Her husband carried her from the spot and took her to Kalasa, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.

E. Shivashankar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Koppa Division, told The Hindu that the unfortunate incident occurred while the couple was working on their plantation amid rain.

“It is an interior area, located about five to six kilometres of aerial distance from Kudremukh National Park. The place is known for the movement of Indian gaurs,” he said.

The woman is survived by her husband and two daughters. The officer said the department would provide an ex gratia of ₹20 lakh to the family and a monthly pension of ₹4,000 for the next five years.

This is the fourth death caused by an Indian gaur attack in Chikkamagaluru district since February 2025. Earlier this year, on April 18, Chetan, 30, died in a similar attack at Marasanige village in Kalasa taluk. Raghunath Hebbar, 73, a farmer, was killed in an Indian gaur attack while working on his coffee plantation at Haluvalli in Kalasa taluk. In another incident, D.V. Ramesh Gowda, 52, was attacked by an Indian gaur at Durgadahalli in Mudigere taluk in July 2025.

Following the series of attacks, the Forest Department captured a male Indian gaur near Arenur in Chikkamagaluru taluk on May 16 this year. The operation was aimed at developing a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the capture and translocation of conflict-causing Indian gaurs.
