A wealthy Maine lawyer and author has been found shot dead at a $9,000-a-month senior living facility. 

Robert Fuller Jr, 87, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head inside his apartment at the Cogir Potomac Senior Living facility in Maryland. 

The body of the beloved lawyer, author and philanthropist was found by the Montgomery Fire Department and police officers just after 7.30am on Saturday.

He was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene, according to law enforcement. 

Officials have determined that Fuller's death was the result of a homicide but said no suspect has been identified yet. 

Fuller was well-known in the Maine city of Augusta after practicing law in the area for more than 35 years.

He moved to Maryland to be closer to family, Bangor Daily News reported. 

In an email to WTOP, Cogir of Potomac Executive Director Rachel Grant said she was unable to share further details to protect the integrity of the investigation.

'What we can tell you is that this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to residents or staff,' she said.

Grant added that security has been stepped up at the facility and counselling is being offered to residents.

Fuller met his wife, Moira, in 2001 and they were together until her death in May 2023.

A friend of Fuller's wrote on Facebook that they were 'saddened and shocked' to hear of his death. 

'Not even safe in a senior living facility. Bob did so much for Augusta. God rest his soul,' they wrote. 

Another said their father worked with Fuller, who they described as 'a very nice person'.

'RIP Robert Fuller Jr. He was murdered in Maryland at his home. He was 87. Bob gave generously to Maine. He loved his State. He gave generously to the Betsy Ann Ross House of Hope, paying for the property and helping with repairs. Thank you sir,' one person wrote. 

A fellow comrade in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War described Fuller as, 'a good man'.

In 2021, Fuller made a $1,640,000 donation to help fund improvements at the Alumni field athletic complex at Cony High School. 

A press release from the Augusta detailing the donation outlined his other philanthropic work including supporting the local hospital, historical society, YMCA and other local services. 

He also set up a scholarship fund administered by Le Club Calumet Educational Foundation to help high schoolers in Augusta and neighboring communities to carry on their education. 

Mayor Dave Rollins said at the time: 'It’s hard to express our depth of gratitude to Bob for what he has done for and continues to do for our City. I speak for the entire community when I say "Thank you Bob Fuller - Augusta is a better place because of you".'

'I believe that when a high school has a continuing history of athletic success, it fosters a sense of community pride. It rubs off. When this pride is evident it becomes easier to attract people who’ll add value – doctors, teachers, artists, entrepreneurs – and who’ll choose to stay around,' Fuller said at the time, according to the release. 

'Not only because Augusta has the superior facilities and services they demand but it’s also where a visitor can detect that its citizens are upbeat and enjoy living where they are. You can’t have successful teams these days without the infrastructure you need to support them. So I don’t think of my action as simply a gift but rather as an investment in Augusta’s future.'
