A Maine kindergartner died after being hit by a school bus at an intersection, according to officials.

Simon Gonzalez, five, was killed just before 8am Tuesday near 437 North East Road in Standish, Maine, a small town about two hours north of Boston.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by the bus, which the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said was only carrying one other student at the time.

That student was Simon's half–brother.

On Wednesday, authorities said the Bonny Eagle School District bus was being driven by Lori Ann Merrifield, 64. No charges have been filed.

'Simon loved life,' Jason Small, the boy's grandfather, told WMTW. 'He just loved to be on the go.'

'Our family has been devastated by this loss. He was and always will be extremely loved and missed by his whole family and everyone that knew him,' Small added.

The fatal crash happened less than half a mile from Edna Libby Elementary School, which Simon attended.

School officials dismissed students early at 11.30am on Tuesday after the tragic death and then announced there were no classes on Wednesday. Students were set to return Thursday.

District Superintendent Clay Gleason said in a statement that the community should keep those directly affected in their thoughts, especially Simon's family. The crash was being investigated.

'The Bonny Eagle community has been deeply impacted by this tragedy and while we can't change the past, we must move forward together,' he added.

The bus involved in the accident that killed Simon was operated by Maine's sixth school administrative district, which is also referred to as Bonny Eagle.

The school district runs the largest public sector bus fleet in Maine, according to its website.

'While I can't share specifics related to this case, it is standard protocol that any employee would be put on administrative leave while an investigation is underway,' Gleason wrote.

On Wednesday, police confirmed the bus driver in the deadly crash as Lori Ann Merrifield. She has not been charged with any wrongdoings following the accident.

A Facebook post from the school district published last May honored Merrifield for her 'remarkable 25 years of service to MSAD 6.'

‘The complex criminal investigation of this tragic incident has many layers, and involves various investigative partners,’ the Cumberland sheriff’s office told the Boston Globe.

Authorities added: ‘The investigative process in these type [sic] of incidents can take time to develop, and we ask for your patience as the investigation proceeds.’

Simon’s father, Wes Pipes, wrote on Facebook that he feels 'so lost’ in wake of the tragedy.

He wrote: ‘I love you so f***ing much I wish I could see you one more time. This world f***ing sucks. You were my f***ing only hope left….i was working so hard for a better life for us…’

The boy was also remembered by his grandmother.

'This boy was the light of my life,' Heidi Roakes Small wrote on Facebook. 'He brought joy to everyone who knew this boy.'

A GoFundMe fundraiser started by Taylor Lien, a family friend, said Simon's parents were 'unprepared for this tragedy and will need all the help they can get.'

As of Thursday afternoon, nearly $52,000 had been raised from an original goal of $40,000.

Since the start of 2015, more than 1,135 school bus crashes have happened in Maine, per data published by the state’s Department of Transportation. So far, 92 have happened this year.
