‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Mariska Hargitay to host this year’s Emmy Awards

It’s been a wild few weeks for Mariska Hargitay, who not only celebrated the New York Knicks winning the NBA Championship last month but she has just been tapped as the host of the 78th Emmy Awards later this year.

Hargitay is the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years, after Jane Lynch hosted the 2011 show on Fox, the home of her then-hit series Glee.

The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star might seem an unlikely choice given the gig has typically been held by comedians, comedic actors and late-night talk show hosts, but she is up for the task.

“Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honour to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers,” Hargitay said in a statement.

“Whether it’s an actor or a director, a costumer or a sound designer, we are all so privileged to take part in creating television that unites us,” she continued. “Regardless of how, where or when we watch, we are together in our laughter, our tears, our love of stories — and our delighted anticipation to see what happens next.”

Hosts in recent years

The last times NBC has aired the Emmys, the network utilized its buffet of Saturday Night Live talent for the hosting gig, including Kenan Thompson in 2022 and “Weekend Update” duo Michael Che and Coin Jost in 2018.

Other past hosts include Jimmy Kimmel (2012, 2016 and 2020), Canadian father-son duo Eugene Levy and Dan Levy in 2024, Neil Patrick Harris (2009 and 2013), Stephen Colbert in 2017, and last year’s PG comedian and — not coincidentally — multiple SNL host Nate Bargatze.

And not only is Hargitay the first female Emmy host in 15 years, she’s just the fourth this century, joining Lynch, Ellen DeGeneres (2001 and 2005) and Heidi Klum (who, technically, co-helmed the show with fellow reality show hosts Tom Bergeron, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst and Ryan Seacrest in 2008).

How many Emmys does Hargitay have?

Arguably, Hargitay is the face of the Law & Order franchise, having starred as Capt. Olivia Benson for the entire run of SVU, which debuted in 1999.

She has been nominated eight times in the Outstanding Lead Actress category, winning in 2006.

Hargitay also has a News and Documentary Emmy on her mantel for producing I Am Evidence, which won the best documentary category 2017.

“Mariska has earned her place among television’s icons. Few performers have left the kind of mark on television that Mariska has,” Jan Neal, NBC/Peacock’s executive VP of live events and specials, said in a statement.

“For 27 seasons, she has brought strength, compassion and humanity to one of the most beloved characters on TV,” Neal added. “As NBC celebrates 100 years of unforgettable storytelling, we can’t think of anyone more fitting to help celebrate the incredible legacy of television.”

This year’s Emmy nominations will be announced on Wednesday, streaming live at 11:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. PT on Emmys.com.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on NBC on Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET from the Peacock Theater.
