AVENTURA (VINnews) -As the Jewish community observes the Fast of Tammuz (Shiva Asar B’Tammuz) on Thursday, July 2, 2026, falling on the 17th of Tammuz 5786, observers are encouraged to approach the day with both physical preparation and spiritual focus. This minor fast commemorates the breaching of Jerusalem’s walls prior to the destruction of the First Temple and marks the beginning of the Three Weeks (Bein HaMetzarim) mourning period leading to Tisha B’Av.

In the Aventura and South Florida area, the fast will begin at dawn, approximately 5:14 a.m., and conclude at nightfall around 8:48 p.m. (Local times should be confirmed via reliable sources such as Hebcal or a community calendar, as slight variations may occur.)
Who Observes the Fast
Healthy adults past bar or bat mitzvah age are obligated to fast from dawn until nightfall. Pregnant and nursing women are generally exempt, as are those who are ill. Individuals with medical conditions, including chronic illnesses, should consult both a physician and a rabbi before fasting. Children under bar/bat mitzvah age are not required to fast, though some parents gradually accustom older children to partial fasting as appropriate.
Physical Tips for an Easier Fast
Fasting for approximately 15-16 hours during the summer months can be challenging, but proper preparation helps:
Hydration is key: Drink ample water and non-caffeinated fluids the day before and evening prior. Reduce caffeine intake gradually in the days leading up to avoid withdrawal headaches.
Pre-fast meal: Consume a balanced evening meal emphasizing complex carbohydrates (such as potatoes, pasta or rice), along with proteins and healthy fats. These foods help retain fluids and provide sustained energy. Avoid overly salty, spicy or heavy foods that may increase thirst.
Evening planning: If planning to eat or drink before dawn, mentally stipulate the intention before going to sleep the night before.
On the fast day, no food or drink is permitted. Brushing teeth or rinsing the mouth is often allowed if care is taken not to swallow any liquid. Those with health concerns should prioritize well-being and seek rabbinic guidance.
Spiritual Focus and Observances
The rabbis teach that the purpose of the fast extends beyond abstaining from food and drink. It serves as a time for reflection, repentance (teshuvah), and contemplation of Jewish history and personal growth.
Participants are encouraged to:
Attend synagogue services, where Selichot, Avinu Malkeinu, and special insertions such as Aneinu are recited.
Study relevant Torah passages about the Temple and historical events.
Increase acts of charity (tzedakah) and avoid anger or unnecessary speech.
The Fast of Tammuz also initiates the Three Weeks, during which haircuts, shaving (according to many customs), listening to music, weddings, and purchasing new items requiring a Shehecheyanu blessing are traditionally restricted.
Breaking the Fast
Conclude the fast gently with water and light foods such as soup or fruit before resuming a normal meal. This helps the body readjust comfortably.
May this fast be meaningful for all who observe it, and may it serve as a step toward personal improvement and the ultimate redemption of the Jewish people with the rebuilding of the Temple, speedily in our days.
Readers are advised to consult their local rabbi for personalized halachic guidance.
