WASHINGTON D.C (VINnews)-President Trump on Monday labeled New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s embrace of Democratic Socialism as the greatest threat to the United States since its founding, equating the ideology with communism.

In remarks responding to comments from Mamdani, who said he was open to becoming a “poster child” for Democrats, Trump warned that the movement represents a dangerous shift toward communism disguised as socialism.

“I think it’s a big threat to our nation, actually, because it’s not socialism, it’s really communism,” Trump said. “They use the word Social Democrat because it sounds so nice, but it’s really communism you’re talking about.”

Trump described the ideology as potentially more perilous than major historical events including World Wars I and II, the Sept. 11 attacks and Pearl Harbor.

“I think this is the biggest threat to our nation,” he continued. “People will smile when I say that, but the smart people are going to say, ‘You know, it’s probably right.’ It’s basically introducing communism into the United States of America. There’s never been anything so dangerous.”

The comments come amid ongoing national debates over the rise of progressive and socialist-leaning candidates within the Democratic Party. Mamdani’s statement has drawn attention as Democrats grapple with their ideological direction following recent elections.
