Sony has announced that it will begin shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in phases, starting August 2026 and continuing through July 2027, as detailed in a PlayStation Blog post.

Once the stores close in a specific market, users will no longer be able to make new digital purchases on either platform. The announcement was made on July 1, 2026. The closures will roll out region by region rather than as a single global cutoff.

When The PS3 And PS Vita Stores Will Shut Down

Sony has announced a schedule for the closure of its PlayStation Store for older consoles. The store on PS3 will close in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting August 2026. In other Latin American and Middle Eastern countries, the PS3 store will close later in 2026. For all other regions, the PlayStation Store for both PS3 and PS Vita will shut down in July 2027.

This phased approach means that players in different regions will have different final purchase dates depending on where they buy content.

After a store closes in a given market, PS3 and PS Vita owners will no longer be able to purchase new games digitally, buy DLC, expansion content, or add-ons through the store, or purchase digital editions of games that are only available via the storefront.

Sony has not announced any changes to the following capabilities in the July 1 update: re-downloading previously purchased content, which usually remains accessible after storefront closures on older platforms; playing games that have already been purchased and downloaded; or using PS Plus and other subscription services on affected platforms.

Users should keep an eye on Sony's follow-up announcements for details about re-download options once the stores are closed.

What Players Can Still Access After The Closure

Sony explained in a blog post on the PlayStation Blog that they understand this news may be disappointing for PS3 and PS Vita players who feel strongly connected to this generation of gaming.

They emphasized that PS3 and PS Vita were important parts of PlayStation's history, making this a difficult decision. As the company continues to focus on expanding the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most users are playing on today, they say they need to allocate more resources to provide the best gaming experiences on these platforms as they plan for the future.

For PS3 and PS Vita users who want to retain access to digital content, the necessary steps vary depending on regional timing. First, check the local shutdown date: users in Mexico, Honduras, or Nicaragua need to act before August 2026.

In other Latin American and Middle Eastern countries, the deadline is late 2026, while most other regions have until July 2027. To prepare, consider purchasing any desired digital games, DLC, or add-ons before the store closes in your area, as no new purchases will be possible afterward.

Download any previously purchased content to your console beforehand to avoid losing access if the download infrastructure changes later. If you are enrolled in PlayStation Plus, back up your saved data to the cloud; alternatively, use external media if supported, to protect your progress independent of Sony's servers.

For physical copies, such as games on Blu-ray or Vita cartridges, these will remain playable after digital store closures. Lastly, users who buy digital content in the final months before the regional shutdown should keep in mind that customer support availability and refund policies might become more limited as the shutdown approaches.

The PlayStation 3 was the first console to feature the PlayStation Store when it launched in 2006. Its shutdown marks the end of a 20-year history for the storefront on that platform. This is the first time Sony has closed a digital storefront for its legacy consoles.

In recent years, similar store closures have taken place on competing platforms:

• Nintendo shut down the Wii U and 3DS eShops in 2023, while
• Microsoft closed the Xbox 360 Store in 2024.

The PlayStation Store on the PS Vita will remain accessible through July 2027 in most markets. This extends the store’s availability alongside the PS3 store's global shutdown for regions not affected by earlier closures.

Both platforms shared a store infrastructure and are being retired together outside of the initial Latin American and Middle Eastern rollouts.

How This Fits Sony’s Broader PlayStation Shift

The store shutdown announcement follows other recent Sony decisions affecting PlayStation users:

• Sony announced on July 1 that it will end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028, moving all new releases to digital-only distribution
