Microsoft has extended support for Windows Server 2022 hotpatching by one year, with the new end date set for October 2027. This change is effective immediately.

The extension applies only to systems running Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition that are enrolled in hotpatch updates. The hotpatch update schedule remains the same through the new end date.

This extension does not affect the mainstream support for Windows Server 2022, which still ends in October 2026 for general updates.

The extended support end dates for Windows Server 2022 editions are as follows: Datacenter, Datacenter: Azure Edition, Essentials, and Standard versions will reach their end of support on October 14, 2031.

What Hotpatching Does And Why It Matters For Organizations

Hotpatching allows security updates to be applied directly to the in-memory code of running processes without the need for restarting.

This means servers can stay online and continue processing workloads while receiving critical security updates, helping to reduce downtime and respond to vulnerabilities more quickly.

However, servers still need to be restarted after installing updates through the regular Windows Update channel. Updates like Windows non-security patches and non-Windows updates such as .NET patches cannot be installed without a restart.

Microsoft announced in a Windows release health dashboard update that support for hotpatch updates on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition has been extended through October 2027. Devices enrolled in hotpatch updates will continue to receive monthly security updates without needing a restart.

For organizations using Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition, the extension offers an extra year of security updates that don’t require restarts.

This means continued protection against security threats without disrupting device operation, helping to maintain server uptime and reduce service interruptions.

It also allows for a quicker response to newly discovered vulnerabilities. The update schedule and experience remain consistent with previous hotpatch releases.

Organizations that have established monitoring, scheduling, and operational practices around hotpatching can continue to use them through October 2027 without any changes.

Eligibility, Enrollment, And What This Means For IT Teams

The extension is only applicable to Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition and systems enrolled in hotpatch updates.

Other editions of Windows Server 2022, such as Standard, Essentials, and Datacenter, are not eligible for hotpatching even when using this extension. These systems will continue to follow the regular update cycle, which requires restarts.

Administrators can check the hotpatch enrollment status either through the Windows Autopatch management interface or via the Azure portal for the affected servers.

For IT teams managing Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition workloads, the extension reduces the urgency to upgrade to a newer Windows Server version solely to retain hotpatching capabilities.

Now, the decision to move to Windows Server 2025 can be based on operational needs and feature requirements rather than concerns over end-of-support deadlines.

Nonetheless, teams should still plan for a future transition, as the extension only provides one additional year and doesn’t alter the overall extended end date for Windows Server 2022, which is October 14, 2031.

Migration planning for Windows Server 2025 or subsequent versions should continue alongside the use of this extended hotpatch support.

Context

Hotpatching has been available since February 2022 for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition. Microsoft has gradually expanded this feature across its product lineup.

  • In September 2024, hotpatching for Windows Server 2025 entered public preview. By
  • In November 2024, testing had begun for Windows 11 24H2 and Windows 365. In
  • In April 2025, hotpatch updates became generally available for Windows 11 Enterprise 24H2 on x64 systems.
  • In May 2026, hotpatching security updates were enabled by default for eligible Windows devices managed through the Microsoft Graph API and Microsoft Intune.

The Windows Server 2022 extension aligns with Microsoft's broader effort to reduce restart-related downtime across server and enterprise Windows deployments.

The new end date of October 2027 is now in effect. Organizations using eligible Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition systems can continue to use hotpatching until that date without modifying their current update procedures.
