"The government deemed it necessary to take measures to protect consumers due to the risk of a surge in unfair profiteering on liquid fuels and goods that are essential for our diet and daily life, following the armed conflict in the Middle East," government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said on Thursday at a press briefing.

He explained that these measures target the food industry, wholesale trade, supermarkets, and commercial companies that distribute these products, as well as petroleum trading companies and fuel stations.

As he underlined, “the government has proven that whenever extraordinary circumstances arise, it provides tangible support to society and the citizens. We are doing so now and will continue to do so as long as is needed, without putting the country’s public finances at risk”.

Marinakis also referred to the Nuclear Energy Summit held in Paris and the prime minister's announcement that the time has come to investigate whether nuclear energy, and specifically small modular reactors, can have a role in the Greek energy system.

"For this purpose, a high-level ministerial committee will be established, which will submit specific proposals to the government on this issue," he noted.

He also mentioned that a new unified food aid system through vouchers is being implemented, with a total budget of 400 million euros.
