I believe I made an error that has resulted in me receiving benefits for which I do not qualify. What are my next steps? Details inside.I have two jobs. Last year, the job from which I earn the bulk of my income stopped paying me (in October). They said there wasn't enough work at the moment. I applied to renew my health insurance on the marketplace in December, hoping that work would pick back up. Things have not improved, and I have not been paid by that job for the first six months of this year. (I have not been fired, which prevents me from applying for unemployment.)
I should have reported the loss of income to the marketplace immediately, but I did not. I can't change that. I contacted Get Covered Illinois today and was able to adjust my income and was told that I may be eligible for Medicaid, but that is not my top concern at the moment.
I am concerned that the payouts BCBS paid to my doctors and pharmacy from January to June will have to be reimbursed by me. I don't know who to talk to about this. The man at Get Covered Illinois gave me phone numbers for three "brokers," who (he said) would walk me through the next steps, because they could make a phone call to Blue Cross, with me on the phone, to figure out what comes next. I called the numbers and was told in no uncertain terms by the "brokers" that there is nothing they can do to help me.
I am also concerned that the IRS will want more money from me because I used their Earned Income Tax Credit to pay for part of my BCBS premium, but I won't have paid enough income tax to cover what they covered.
I am unsure about what to do next. Since I don't know enough about the marketplace, I don't want to call BCBS without more information. I am frightened that they will think I was trying to con them out of insurance I couldn't afford. I've made a bad mistake and don't know how to fix it.
