Ronaldo, Yamal relatively ineffective so far

Tale of the tape so far. The two cynosures - Ronaldo and Yamal have been relatively ineffective. Yamal has had a few runs, but except for a curler, he hasn’t been as threatening as his reputation. Ronaldo has barely got any touches, and the shots he has had so far have not been threatening either.

In sum, a tentative first half by both sides.

Spain enjoying more possession, Portugal reluctant to take risks

Spain is enjoying more possession as time goes by. Portugal is reluctant to take risks with vertical balls in the opening minutes, albeit keeping a high back line, preferring slower switches of play.

Spain will rue the missed chance by Oyarzabal. It was a gilt-edged opportunity.

    22:29 Start Delay

Delay in the match for a drinks break. Food for thought as both teams head into a hydration break. Both seemed to take a relatively guarded approach, testing the waters and looking for chinks in the other’s armour.

Yamal hands over possession to Portugal

Yamal has been relatively sloppy in the early minutes of the game, handing over possession to Portugal.

But here he is, cutting in and releasing a curler, earning a save from Costa, with the rebound falling to Baena, whose shot on goal was expertly deflected by Costa for a corner for Spain.

All eyes on the forwards: Spain's Yamal and Portugal's Ronaldo

All eyes will be on the two forwards in the teams. The first is a 41-year-old legend, playing his sixth World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo, who will seek to make the best of his role as a poacher for the Portuguese. For Spain, it will be the 18-year-old wizard, Lamine Yamal, who will be hugging the right-side touchline but will use feints, dribbles and every trick in the book to maraud towards goal with killer passes or strikes.

At this stage of the World Cup though, the knockouts... both teams will need all hands... or feet on deck to really compete. Spain will be the favourite because of their record so far. They haven’t conceded a goal in the World Cup as their possession game has strangled opponents. They have got better in later games; the 3-0 win against Austria was clinical, with the latter not even mustering a shot at goal.

But Portugal features an athletic and experienced team and is the biggest challenge that La Furia Roja (as Spain’s football team is called) has faced so far. Let’s brace for a closely fought game.

    What to expect this match

Expect a closely fought, technical game, marked by a sharp midfield battle with both teams fielding world class midfielders. Spain will have young talisman and Barcelona genius Pedri, along with last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Rodri (from Manchester City) at the centre of the park, with Barcelona’s advanced midfielder Dani Olmo manning the space between the lines upfront.

Portugal features Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield maestros in Vitinha and Joao Neves, with EPL Player of the Year Bruno Fernandes taking up creative duties upfront.

Spain and Portugal teams met five times since last clash in 2018 World Cup

Spain and Portugal are European heavyweights who have met each other five times since they last clashed in the 2018 World Cup. That game ended 3-3 with a younger Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a hat-trick. Four of the five games since then were deadlocked or drawn in regulation full time. One game went Spain’s way 1-0 in 2022. The last time they met, though, in 2025, Portugal scraped through on penalties after the game was drawn 2-2 in regulation time.

In terms of overall record, Spain leads 17-6 with 18 draws in 41 encounters since 1921 against Portugal.

Srinivasan Ramani and Vighnesh Venkitesh will bring you live commentary on the Iberian match-up.
