The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two of the franchise’s biggest contract negotiations hanging over the organization as training camp approaches. While much of the attention has focused on quarterback Baker Mayfield, defensive tackle Vita Vea is also seeking a new deal.
Unfortunately for Tampa Bay, the latest update doesn’t suggest an agreement is imminent.
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on The Insiders, the Buccaneers and Vea remain far apart in extension talks, creating another major decision for the front office before the season begins.
Although Vea is one of the most important players on Tampa Bay’s defense, the Buccaneers’ primary focus is understandably centered on Mayfield.
Franchises almost always prioritize their starting quarterback when negotiating long-term contracts. If Tampa Bay plans to keep Mayfield beyond 2026, completing that deal will likely take precedence over every other extension.
That doesn’t mean Vea’s situation is any less important.
It simply highlights the difficult balancing act facing general manager Jason Licht as he tries to retain multiple cornerstone players under the salary cap.
There is no questioning what Vea has meant to the Buccaneers.
For years, he has been one of the NFL’s premier run-stopping defensive tackles while consistently disrupting opposing offenses. His combination of size, strength, and athleticism is rare, making him one of the most valuable players on Tampa Bay’s defense.
The difficult part is projecting what comes next.
Vea will play the 2026 season at 31 years old, an age when many defensive linemen begin to decline. Committing significant money to any player entering his thirties carries risk, regardless of how productive he has been.
The Buccaneers must determine whether Vea can continue performing at an elite level throughout another long-term contract or whether his best football is already behind him.
The Buccaneers can’t evaluate Vea’s extension in a vacuum.
Every dollar committed to one player affects the organization’s ability to retain another.
If Mayfield signs a lucrative extension, Tampa Bay’s financial flexibility will shrink considerably. That reality could make reaching an agreement with Vea much more complicated.
Conversely, if the Buccaneers choose to extend Vea first, it could raise questions about how aggressively they intend to pursue a long-term deal with Mayfield.
There is also another possibility.
Neither extension may happen before the season begins.
The front office has shown in recent years that difficult decisions are part of building a sustainable contender.
Moving on from longtime franchise icons demonstrated the organization is willing to prioritize its long-term vision over sentimentality when necessary.
That same philosophy could influence how the Buccaneers approach Vea’s future.
No one should question what Vea has accomplished in Tampa Bay or what he still brings to the defense. At the same time, Jason Licht and the front office have to evaluate where the roster will be two, three, and four years from now—not just this season.
Training camp may be approaching, but the Buccaneers still have two franchise-defining contract decisions waiting to be made. Whether either deal gets done before the regular season could say a great deal about the organization’s vision for its future.
