Kristin Cavallari and her ex, Jay Cutler, share three children together: Camden, 13, Jaxon, 12, and Saylor, 10. And during a recent appearance on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, Kristin talked about teaching her kids about the value of money.

Saying that she's "hyper-aware" of the fact that her children are "growing up in a very fortunate situation," Kristin said, "they fly coach, I’m flying first class."

"That was important to me when they became old enough that they could. It’s not [difficult to do] when they’re older. I’m like, 'Bye, guys, have fun back there,'" she said, acknowledging that this isn't something she could've done when they were younger. "They'll be fine. It’s good for them. And I think it’s the little things like that as a parent that make, ultimately, I think, a big difference in the long run."

Kristin — who has a reported net worth of $30 million — emphasized that her kids "don't just get whatever they want" and "if they want something, they have to work for it."

"A good example is last summer, both of my boys created their own little businesses," she revealed. "One of my boys was washing people’s windows. And the other one was washing people’s garbage cans. Because if they want something, they got to go work for it. And they got to make it happen... I want them to know this is my money. This is not your money."

So, Kristin said that this method works well for her, but that "there is no one size fits all" when it comes to parenting. And, as you'd expect, it hasn't taken long for her comments about her kids flying coach to spark some backlash.

On Reddit, one user wrote that they will "will NEVER understand this stupid ass logic": "That’s like saying 'my kids sleep in a tent in the backyard because they didn’t purchase their own house.' Ma’am, those are YOUR kids, why do they have to earn their way to anything that you readily experience on the regular? What’s the point of being wealthy if you’re going to penny-pinch your own children?"

Someone else suggested that, if she wanted to keep her kids humble, she could fly in economy with them. "The way she’s doing it is basically creating a weird class system within her own family," they wrote. "I’m sure she can still take plenty of child-free trips where she can enjoy first class if she wants to."

"This screams selfish, scummy parenting rather than trying not to spoil her kids," someone else agreed. "If she wanted to teach them to be humble and not bratty, she should fly economy with them."

Elsewhere in the conversation, people considered how the kids might feel about the separation, writing: "I would be so sad if I was 10 years old and my mom didn’t want to sit by me on an airplane."

"In theory, 13, 12, and 10 should be fine, but I think I would prefer they be with their parent to supervise their behavior," someone else echoed. "Don't make someone else have to deal with your 3 teens/preteens." Plenty of people questioned "who is taking care of her kids," while others said they couldn't imagine being separated from their children during an emergency, saying, "Even if we had a nanny or trusted relative... I can’t fathom a situation where we have to rely on oxygen masks or use the slide, and my kid isn’t right next to me."

For what it's worth, some people could appreciate what Kristin is trying to do with the strict boundary. "I can see what she’s trying to get at, and this is probably a good lesson for unfathomably rich children," one user wrote. "Especially when you think that she has been rich her whole life, probably a challenging thing to navigate as a mother."

However, most seem to think it's a little extreme. "Isn't that why parents work? To give our children the lives we didn't have," someone else wrote. "Of course, don't give them everything, nor let them become spoiled, but if I can’t give my children the same things I give myself, then I don’t do it."

"This did not land how she thought it would," added another user.
