If there’s one thing we can say about Donald Trump’s mental map of the world, it’s that it certainly keeps cartographers on their toes. Whether he's redesigning the U.S. border, inventing new African nations, or just generally rearranging the continents to suit the moment, his geography skills could definitely use a refresher course.

This week at the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump gifted us another geographical blunder. While detailing a recent missile attack on the USS Abraham Lincoln, he publicly declared that the U.S. had been fired upon by the "Islamic Republic of Japan". Awkwardly, he accidentally named Japan – a country that hasn't fired in anger at the US in almost a century – instead of Iran.

It's far from the first time the US President seems to have got his map muddled. With that being said, here is a look back at some of his most memorable geographical missteps.

1. Iran and Qatar (2026)

Just last month, Trump slipped up at the G7 summit in France as he made an impossible geographical claim. Discussing Qatar, he said: "They are the closest to Iran physically, so, with other countries, I noticed that they had to travel about 45 minutes to get there. With you, you could walk right across the border, so you are in a more dangerous position."

The two nations are separated by the Persian Gulf, so it's highly unlikely Trump would actually be able to stroll between them!

2. Greenland vs. Iceland (2026)

Earlier this year, while giving a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump reportedly kept confusing Greenland and Iceland.

Speaking to reporters, he said: "They're not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you. I mean, our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland's already cost us a lot of money."

3. Armenia and Albania (2025)

While speaking about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Trump took credit for easing tensions between Azerbaijan and Albania – completely confusing the Balkan nation of Albania with Armenia.

This led to him being mocked by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. He told French President Macron: "You should make an apology… to us because you didn’t congratulate us on the peace deal that President Trump made between Albania and Azerbaijan", leading Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev to burst out laughing.

4. DR Congo (2025)

Despite trying to strike a deal with Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi last year, Trump knows little about the nation. He said: "Many people come from the Congo. I don’t know what that is", which led to online critics branding him the "dumbest President" yet.

5. Colorado Border Wall (2019)

During a speech in Pennsylvania, Trump boasted to his supporters that his administration was building a beautiful border wall in Colorado — a state that is famously landlocked and several hundred miles north of Mexico.

He claimed to be joking about the matter, but the jury's still out on that one!

6. Namibia (2017)

While addressing African leaders at the United Nations to praise their healthcare systems, Trump twice referenced a non-existent country called "Nambia."

The White House later clarified he meant Namibia, but not soon enough to avoid the President being mecilessly mocked over the mistake.

7. Belgium (2016)

Trump probably knows where Belgium is now – given they've just knocked the USA out of the World Cup! However, he seemed to be confused on the matter a decade ago.

Back in 2016, he told crowds at a campaign rally in Atlanta, Georgia: "Belgium is a beautiful city". It's believed the President actually meant the capital city, Brussels, which was hosting the NATO meeting at the time.
