A new study of nearly 300 US cities ranked New York City as the safest city in America for pedestrians and cyclists.
No surprise to us, New York is No. 1.
A new study, conducted by personal injury law firm Wagner Reese and analyzing nearly 300 US cities, ranked New York City as the safest city in America for pedestrians and cyclists.
That’s right. New York — yet again rated the greatest city in the world — is the best for people walking and those one bikes.

Searches for “bike lane rules” are up over 130%, and “do pedestrians have the right of way” has jumped 70% and New Yorkers got it.
According to the data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, NYC has the lowest combined fatality risk score in the country — 5.85 out of 100.
Meanwhile, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the most dangerous city for cyclists and pedestrians, scored a staggering 85.6.
Why is NYC No. 1?
NY walks the walk and bikes the bike.
NYC’s Vision Zero initiative brought protected bike lanes and crosswalks as well as lower vehicle speed limits. Helayne Seidman
Launched in 2014, NYC’s Vision Zero initiative has been reshaping the city’s streetscape to protect pedestrians and cyclists.
We now have protected bike lanes, leading pedestrian intervals that give people a head start crossing intersections, lower speed limits, raised crosswalks and traffic enforcement in high-risk zones.
All of these measures work to reduce fatalities and improve street safety — and the results speak for themselves.
Unlike many car-centric cities, New York City has made walking and biking a part of daily life. And while it still has its challenges, NYC continues to lead with design and data.
We still have our fair share of chaotic intersections, speedy delivery scooters and subway stairs that eat ankles.
But when it comes to safety on the streets, we’re miles ahead.
