A new map spotlights 17 spectacular geological gems around Mammoth Mountain

SO YOU’RE BIG INTO BASALT? Then you are most definitely a Devils Postpile devotee, and with utterly understandable reason. The colossal clutch of columns — yep, they’re hexagonal in form, adding to their mythical appearance and otherworldly aura — has long drawn both basalt buffs and lovers of eons-old wonders to the Mammoth Mountain region, at least during those months when the road to reach them has been fully de-snowed. But there are a host of geological features around the peak-packed, valley-lush region, the places that uplift, fill a person with awe, and make us glad we are living life on this particular, and awesomely peculiar, planet. To help visitors and locals find their way to all seventeen — an impressive number, to be sure — there is a new map, one that spotlights the “Certified Unreal” locations around Mammoth Mountain. Including, yes, Mammoth Mountain itself, which stands as one of the spectacular seventeen sites illustrated on the guide.
“EXTRAORDINARY TERRAIN”: Water gets the love on the map — Convict Lake is one of the points to experience — as do the Minarets, those jagged summits that add such drama to the skyline. “From steaming geothermal features and ancient lava formations to glacier-carved lakes and dramatic mountain landscapes, this region is defined by some extraordinary terrain that you don’t need to fully understand to appreciate,” reads a moving message on the map. Covering all of the geological wonders in a day would be a tall order, though whether the order is as tall as Mammoth or the Minarets is up for debate. Instead, plan to spend a long weekend exploring the June Lake Loop or Long Valley, then return down the road for those incredible peaks/creeks/waterfalls you missed. And worry not, Mono Lake mavens: The tufa-terrific saline soda lake makes a showing near the top of the map.
