The cosy pub is located in a Cambridgeshire village and I felt transported back in time
English classics have long been a fan-favourite for their comforting nature and impactful flavours. So when I found myself in the village of Duxford and in need of some lunch, I headed to a classic Britihs pub that has been highly sought-after since World War Two.
The CamBites series sees our reporters going around Cambridgeshire in search of the best food that doesn't break the bank. The Plough at Duxford, on St Peter's Street, dates back to 1851, so has been frequented by locals and visitors for more than 150 years.
It offers "freshly prepared" traditional pub grub cooked on the premises, according to their website. From homemade lasagne to a fish pie, the menu had plenty to offer. I have a soft spot for an English classic, and I tend to lean towards a traditional fish and chips, so I was intrigued by each of the options.
In need of diversifying my palate, I chose to try the homemade chilli con carne, offered with either rice or chips. It only felt right to treat myself to some chips after a sweltering day in the sun - what else to make you feel better than a portion of crunchy chips?
I felt that the meal was a bit of a bargain price too - costing £11.95. For a drink, I chose a Diet Coke. While I waited for my food, I admired the charming décor, the low ceiling and the homely cottage vibe.
Surrounding me were lots of mementos, pictures and locals chattering away in the background. Flags were hung across the restaurant in support of the ongoing World Cup.
After a little while, and a chat with a lovely regular customer, my food arrived. I tucked straight into my dish, after taking some Instagram-worthy pictures of the food, and was hit almost straight away with a combination of flavours and the warm, comforting feeling of home cooked food.
The chips were chunky and golden - just the way I prefer them to be, and the the chilli was packed full of flavour. Despite being really hungry, I was defeated by the end. It's certainly unlike me to leave any chips - so in doing so, I can sincerely say they were good-sized portions.
The total cost of my meal and drink came to £15.95. On heading off, I was recommended to take a look outside to read about the history of the pub written on a sign. It highlighted its common use by airmen from the nearby Duxford airfield during their breaks from flying Spitfires and Hurricanes.
If you find yourself in or near Duxford, The Plough is definitely worth a try, especially for those who are passionate about indulging in and learning about its history.
