Boston Red Sox pitcher Danny Coulombe threw two scoreless innings July 11 in a 4-0 victory over the New York Mets. It was his first scoreless outing after a couple recent hiccups.

His reward: losing his spot on the roster immediately after the game.

Boston designated Coulombe for assignment, according to multiple reports, likely ending the 36-year-old’s tenure with the Red Sox just before the All-Star break.

Coloumbe is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 2026, his 12th MLB season. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, who first reported Coulombe was being designated for assignment, the left-hander’s contract included bonuses based on appearance that would have kicked in once he made 30 appearances.

Coulombe’s appearance against the Mets was his 29th of the season. The Red Sox now have seven days to either trade Coulombe, or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.

Coulombe has logged 371 games in his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2014-15), Oakland A’s (2015-18), Minnesota Twins (2020-22, 2025), Baltimore Orioles (2023-24) and Texas Rangers (2025). He has a career ERA of 3.45, and five saves.

Despite the Red Sox’s indifference, Coulombe should have no trouble landing elsewhere. He’s been able to stifle right-handed hitters (.220/.301/.387) and left-handers (.237/.302/.303) in his journeyman career.

Besides saving money, it’s not immediately clear why the Red Sox didn’t include Coulombe in their plans. He missed time earlier this season with cervical spasms, and allowed runs in consecutive relief appearances against the Washington Nationals (June 30) and Chicago White Sox (July 7) before bouncing back in Queens.

The victory over the Mets allowed the Red Sox to improve to 45-48, good for third place in the American League East and only half a game behind the Seattle Mariners for the third and final AL Wild Card berth.

Now, they will try to qualify for a playoff berth without one of their stalwart bullpen arms.
