With the weather department forecasting continued rainfall over Mumbai and its suburbs over the next few hours, the municipal administration has urged residents to limit outdoor movement and disregard unverified information. This advisory follows an incident on Saturday (July 4, 2026) afternoon in Bhandup West, where a section of road and footpath collapsed into an excavation pit.

The collapse occurred at 1.25 p.m. on LBS Marg near Asian Paints in the Sonapur area. A developer had dug a pit of considerable for a building project adjacent to the road. Rainfall over the preceding days and during the previous night saturated the soil beside the excavation, causing it to lose cohesion. The road and footpath, along with a tree, a portion of a bus stop, and construction materials, fell into the pit. A vehicle sustained damage in the incident, but no casualties were reported.

Video footage of the incident shows the road surface and the adjacent structures giving way into the water-filled pit. Underground wiring in the area was exposed and damaged.

Upon receiving information, disaster management personnel, Mumbai Police, and municipal staff reached the location. Authorities closed traffic on the affected stretch of LBS Marg. Police barricaded the entire area and restricted public access, citing the possibility of further subsidence in the remaining road sections.

Residents have alleged that the developer did not implement adequate safety measures while digging the pit. They also claimed that the contractor handling drainage work was negligent, which prevented proper water flow and contributed to the collapse.

The municipal administration has appealed to citizens to exercise caution, step out only when necessary, and not believe in rumours. The weather department has indicated that rainfall intensity is likely to persist in the coming hours.
