The school summer holidays are almost here, meaning countless parents are on the hunt for the perfect sunny destination — and we think we may have found just the spot.
To help take the stress out of planning the ultimate summer day out, with safety, affordability and great locations firmly in mind, the AA has done all the hard work on your behalf. They have put together a carefully compiled list of the UK's safest and finest beaches to visit in 2026.
Having assessed more than 228 coastal spots based on key criteria including average Google review scores, car parking charges, lifeguard provision, RNLI lifeboat stations, average water temperature and monthly sunshine hours in July, they've produced a reliable list of beaches you can visit with complete confidence.
Taking the top spot overall was Devon's Exmouth Beach, which achieved the highest score of 76.42 out of 100. A much-loved coastal gem in the South-West, and for very good reason — it boasts two miles of golden sand, sweeping views and plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
What truly sets Exmouth Beach apart is the presence of an RNLI lifeboat station directly on the beach, along with lifeguard-patrolled waters throughout the summer months, making it the ultimate family-friendly choice. On top of that, it holds an impressive Google review rating of 4.7 out of five stars, and car parking won't break the bank either, coming in at just £5 for the day.
When it comes to safety for bathers, the water quality is reportedly 'perfect', making it an ideal spot for a paddle, a quick swim or a full day of aquatic activities. The beach is a favourite among sports enthusiasts and features numerous nearby outlets where visitors can hire equipment for paddleboarding, kitesurfing and kayaking with the spectacular coastline as a backdrop.
In terms of amenities, this destination ticks all the boxes, with virtually everything required for a hassle-free outing within easy reach. There are pay-and-display car parks along the seafront, public conveniences at regular points and plenty of cafes, restaurants and ice cream stands beside the beach.
Having recently visited the family-friendly Exmouth Beach, one Tripadvisor reviewer wrote: "Family and friends day out. What a lovely place, fantastic beach, great gentle walking on the esplanade. Well kept areas and spotlessly clean. Would definitely recommend."
Another pleased visitor added: "Lovely beach and views! ! you can come with your furry friend and enjoy the views! ! sandy beach and lots of places around to grab a drink or take away, you can also come with your BBQ."
Taking second place behind Exmouth Beach was Frinton-on-Sea in Essex, achieving a score of 74.19 out of 100. The beach is hardly a hidden gem, attracting more than 40,000 monthly Google searches and boasting an average rating of 4.6, though it appears to earn its popularity.
The study found that it performs particularly well due to its convenient free parking and pleasant temperatures. Sun-seekers will not be disappointed, as the destination basks in approximately 211 hours of sunshine during July alone, with a pleasant average sea temperature of 18.5 degrees Celsius.
Nestled within a delightful Victorian seaside town, it provides the perfect tranquil escape, with the reassurance that your children can enjoy themselves in a safe environment.
