Share Play on PS4 is like handing your controller to a friend through the internet. It is awesome when it works. It is not awesome when the screen turns into soup and your hero jumps three seconds late.

TLDR: Use a wired Ethernet connection if you can. Keep your PS4 close to the router if you use Wi Fi. Pause downloads, close streaming apps, and test your upload speed. For the smoothest Share Play, both players need a stable connection, not just “fast internet.”

Why Share Play Gets Laggy

PS4 Share Play needs a strong and steady internet connection. It does not only care about download speed. It also needs good upload speed.

That is because your PS4 is sending video and controls to your friend. Or your friend is sending them to you. If the connection wobbles, Share Play wobbles too.

Lag can happen for many reasons. Your Wi Fi may be weak. Your router may be tired. Someone may be watching 4K videos in the next room. Your PS4 may also be downloading a huge game update in secret, like a sneaky goblin.

1. Use Ethernet If Possible

This is the big one. If you can use an Ethernet cable, do it. It is the boring cable of victory.

A wired connection is more stable than Wi Fi. It has less delay. It also avoids problems from walls, floors, microwaves, fish tanks, and other weird signal blockers.

To connect your PS4 with Ethernet:

  • Plug one end of the cable into your PS4.
  • Plug the other end into your router.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Choose Network.
  • Select Set Up Internet Connection.
  • Choose Use a LAN Cable.
  • Pick Easy.

That is it. No magic spell needed.

2. Improve Your Wi Fi Setup

If Ethernet is not possible, you can still make Wi Fi better. First, move your PS4 closer to the router. Distance matters. Walls matter too.

Do not hide your router in a cabinet. Do not put it behind a TV. Do not bury it under old cables and snack wrappers. Routers like open space.

Try these simple Wi Fi fixes:

  • Place the router high up, like on a shelf.
  • Keep it away from thick walls.
  • Move it away from microwaves and cordless phones.
  • Restart the router once in a while.
  • Make sure the PS4 is not too far away.

If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi Fi, test both. The 5 GHz band is usually faster. But it has shorter range. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther, but it may be more crowded.

3. Check Your Upload Speed

Share Play needs upload speed. Many people forget this. They look at download speed and think everything is fine.

But Share Play is like video calling with a controller. Your PS4 must send game video to another player. That means upload power.

Sony recommends at least 2 Mbps upload and download for Share Play. For smoother play, aim for 5 Mbps or more. More is better. Stable is best.

On your PS4, test your connection here:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Choose Network.
  • Select Test Internet Connection.

Look at upload speed. Also watch for failed tests. If the numbers jump around a lot, your connection may not be stable.

4. Stop Downloads and Streaming

Your internet is like a road. Share Play needs a clear lane. If everyone is driving monster trucks on that road, lag will happen.

Before starting Share Play, pause anything that eats bandwidth.

  • Pause PS4 game downloads.
  • Pause system updates.
  • Close streaming apps like Netflix or YouTube.
  • Ask others to avoid huge downloads for a bit.
  • Stop cloud backups on phones or computers.

This can make a huge difference. It is not fancy. It works.

5. Restart the PS4 and Router

Yes, the classic advice is real. Turn it off and on again. It sounds silly. It often works.

Routers can get tired. PS4 network settings can get stuck. A quick restart clears small bugs and freshens the connection.

Try this:

  1. Turn off the PS4 fully. Do not use Rest Mode.
  2. Unplug the router power cable.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the router back in.
  5. Wait until the internet light is stable.
  6. Turn the PS4 back on.

Now test Share Play again. Sometimes this simple trick saves game night.

6. Lower Share Play Expectations a Little

Share Play is cool, but it is not local multiplayer. It depends on the internet. Some delay may happen, especially in fast games.

Fighting games, racing games, and shooters need quick reactions. Even small lag can feel huge. Slower games usually work better. RPGs, puzzle games, adventure games, and turn based games are friendlier to Share Play.

If a game feels too laggy, try a different game. Your internet may be fine. The game may just be too fast for remote control.

7. Make Sure Both Players Have Good Connections

This is important. Share Play is a team sport. Both connections matter.

If you are the host, your upload speed matters a lot. If your friend is joining, their download speed and stability matter too. If either side has weak Wi Fi, Share Play can become a slideshow.

Ask your friend to try the same fixes:

  • Use Ethernet if possible.
  • Move closer to the router.
  • Pause downloads.
  • Restart the router.
  • Test upload and download speed.

Do not blame the controller. The controller has feelings.

8. Check NAT Type

NAT Type affects how well your PS4 connects to other players. You can see it in the PS4 connection test.

There are three common NAT types:

  • Type 1: Open. Usually great.
  • Type 2: Normal. Usually fine for most players.
  • Type 3: Strict. Can cause connection problems.

If you have NAT Type 3, Share Play may struggle. You may need to enable UPnP on your router. You can also set up port forwarding for PSN. Router menus are different, so check your router manual or internet provider guide.

Be careful with router settings. Do not click random buttons like you are defusing a cartoon bomb.

9. Update Your PS4

Updates can fix network bugs. They can also improve system performance. Keep your PS4 software current.

Go to:

  • Settings
  • System Software Update

If an update is available, install it. Also update the game you want to play. A newer version may work better online.

10. Avoid Peak Internet Hours

Sometimes the problem is not your PS4. It is the whole neighborhood. Internet can slow down during busy hours. This often happens in the evening.

If Share Play is terrible at 8 PM, try again earlier or later. If it works better at another time, your connection may be getting crowded during peak hours.

11. Consider a Better Router or Internet Plan

If nothing helps, your gear may be the problem. Old routers can struggle with modern gaming. A better router can improve stability and range.

You may also need a faster internet plan, especially with better upload speed. Look at the upload number, not just the shiny download number in big text.

If many people use the internet at home, you need more bandwidth. Gaming, streaming, phones, laptops, and smart TVs all take a slice of the pie. Share Play wants a clean slice.

Quick Share Play Checklist

  • Best fix: Use Ethernet.
  • Wi Fi fix: Move closer to the router.
  • Speed fix: Check upload speed.
  • Lag fix: Pause downloads and streams.
  • Connection fix: Restart PS4 and router.
  • Advanced fix: Check NAT Type.
  • Final fix: Upgrade router or internet plan.

Final Thoughts

PS4 Share Play is amazing when the connection is smooth. It lets friends play together, share funny moments, and rescue each other from impossible boss fights.

Start with the simple fixes. Use Ethernet. Pause downloads. Restart the router. Then check upload speed and NAT Type if needed.

You do not need to be a network wizard. You just need to give Share Play a steady road to drive on. Do that, and your next session should feel less like lag soup and more like game night magic.
