À 83 ans, Paul McCartney n’a pas encore raccroché les gants. Six ans après McCartney III, l’ex-Beatles jette un regard souriant sur ses jeunes années à Liverpool. Sa voix, plus chevrotante, colore de vieux souvenirs. Dans The Boys of Dungeon Lane, nommé d’après une rue de son enfance, Macca chante les fins de mois difficiles de ses parents (l’amère ballade cuivrée Salesman Saint), sa virée sudiste en auto-stop avec George Harrison (le folk acoustique Down South), et retrouve Ringo sur le rock plus sautillant de Home to Us, qui peint leur ancien quartier. On navigue entre les multiples univers de McCartney. Dans l’ouverture As You Lie There, il ressuscite l’esprit des Wings. Plus loin, Mountain Top fleure la pop étrange des Sparks, tandis que l’étonnant Never Know se pare d’une élégance baroque.
