Harper says he recorded a personal Cameo video for a fan’s family in 2024, reading a script someone sent him in good faith. He didn’t know the man on the other end had lost more than $1.5 million to FanDuel, or that the company would slap its logo on the clip and use it to keep him betting.
Terry Thompson wagered roughly $18.5 million on FanDuel, lost about $1.52 million, and mortgaged his home into foreclosure before entering psychiatric care. As a VIP, he got perks: champagne, Super Bowl tickets, and a 21-second Thanksgiving message from Bryce Harper.
That video came through Cameo in November 2024. According to Harper’s statement, a person identifying themselves only as “Bryttanni” ordered it in the personal category as a “holiday video for Terry,” with a script Harper read without knowing where it would go. Personal Cameo videos ran him around $899 and carried no commercial usage rights. The business tier, which does, cost $9,999.
FanDuel added its own logo and sent the clip to Thompson as a VIP promotion while he was deep in gambling debt. Harper says he has no affiliation with the sportsbook and no endorsement deal.
Thompson sued FanDuel, DraftKings, and others in March 2025, alleging the companies use VIP programs and in-game microbetting to maximize addiction. Harper is not named as a defendant. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is reviewing the case.
