Real Estate Board of New York President James Whelan, reacting to the board's 7-1 vote Thursday to freeze rents on roughly 1 million stabilized apartments, the first two-year freeze in the board's history and a fulfillment of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's signature campaign pledge. The vote came hours after a property owner representative resigned from the board, calling the decision a "legal line" crossed. A report released last week by the antipoverty group Robin Hood found rent regulations kept roughly 140,000 New Yorkers from falling below the poverty line. (Gothamist)
