Small patios can be transformed with a simple addition

Alan Titchmarsh has shared a straightforward method to improve the look of small patios. The gardening expert has plenty of tips and tricks to make gardens look stunning.

He admitted that patios are often neglected and a "forgotten" element in gardens. Many opt to place a handful of containers and garden furniture, yet it can still appear incomplete or unwelcoming.

Fortunately, Alan demonstrated that you can transform small patios into a "beautiful outdoor room" where you'll genuinely want to relax.

In his Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh TikTok clip, the expert used his own patio as a demonstration. He ensured it had been thoroughly cleaned before beginning and added painted containers into the area.

Alan stated: "They are just crying out now for the planting that will see us right the way through the summer to turn this dining area into an area you are dying to be in."

To achieve this, Alan added structural plants into his containers to establish a centrepiece before completing the surrounding spaces. He remarked: "I want height, I want to create floral and foliage walls and something that gives you a stained glass window effect."

Alan used evergreen varieties, allowing them to remain in the containers year-round. "When the summer flowers fade, you can whip them out for autumn, winter and spring plants," the specialist outlined.

In his video description, Alan commented: "A patio doesn't have to be just a place for a few tired pots and a table, it can become a beautiful outdoor room you'll genuinely want to spend time in.

"With thoughtful planting and clever use of structure, even a small patio can feel warm, inviting, and full of life throughout the summer."

Alan recommended opting for evergreen varieties including Ilex crenata and Pittosporum. These can remain throughout the year and be complemented by seasonal blooms.

He continued: "Container colour also plays a surprisingly important role. Warm neutral tones, like clay, beautifully complement almost any flower colour or green foliage, helping the planting stand out even more.

"The best part of this kind of setup is its flexibility, summer flowers can later be swapped for autumn, winter, or spring planting, keeping your patio fresh and full of interest all year round.

"With the right balance of structure, height, and colour, even the smallest patio can become a space you never want to leave."
