The "egg tower" is a Long Range Radar station. Operated under the Joint Surveillance System, the radar is maintained by the United States Air Force and Federal Aviation Administration. It is used for air traffic control. Unlike smaller, faster-spinning airport radars, this slowly rotating station has a range of a couple hundred miles, with feeds going to Lambert International Airport and the Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center in Olathe, KS.
