Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli has claimed that the club are working on a new contract for Ederson. It comes after Manchester United agreed a £38million deal for the Brazilian in early June.

The midfielder had been eager to join the Reds and hinted during the World Cup that the move was all-but confirmed. The Manchester Evening News understands that United may seek to renegotiate the deal, which became complex following medical tests that raised concerns about a knee injury sustained last season.

And Atalanta's Giuntoli has suggested that the 27-year-old may now stay with the Serie A side. He claims to have been surprised that Ederson's move to Old Trafford has not been completed.

Speaking via Fabrizio Romano, he said: "We were stunned [by Man United calling Ederson deal off]. Now we are working on a new contract for him."

Ederson had been a summer target for Atletico Madrid, but they turned their attentions to Wolves' midfielder Joao Gomes instead - though that move for the La Liga side does look to be off. United have scouted Ederson previously during his four years at Atalanta and looked poised to sign him as part of an overhaul of their midfield this summer.

The Reds confirmed the £50m signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday. The club are also set to sign Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans after activating the Belgian's £35m release clause.

United's business has gone some way to address what has been a major issue. Casemiro left this summer as a free agent, and Manuel Ugarte was set to be sold, but the Uruguay international has been ruled out for an extended period with cruciate ligament damage.

There was then some frustration among supporters after the club's hopes of signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest faded when it became apparent it would cost in excess of £110m - a fee the club were unwilling to match.

United turned their attention to West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, but the Portuguese joined Tottenham Hotspur instead after the north London outfit offered a guaranteed £85m.

With Kobbie Mainoo still at the World Cup with England, United faced opening their pre-season campaign against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, with Mason Mount as the only recognised senior midfielder in Michael Carrick's squad.

Carrick's side will face Wrexham, Rosenberg in Trondheim, Norway and Atletico Madrid in Stockholm, Sweden, between July 18 and August 1st.
