A pair of kissing-daredevils scaled the Empire State Building’s 1,454-foot antenna in a cringe Instagram stunt before being arrested Wednesday.
Angela Nikolau, 33, and her beau — who goes by Ivan “Vanya” Beerkus on social media but was identified as Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, by sources — were carrying a banner reading “when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace” as they got engaged atop the landmark at around noon.
The banner’s message is a slightly modified version of a quote frequently misattributed to guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, which was actually spoken by 19th-century British politician William Gladstone.
A pair of daredevils clad in dark clothes scaled the Empire State Building’s 1,454-foot antenna. CBS News The duo was carrying a banner reading “when the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” CBS NewsAfter lingering at the top of the tower for around 30 minutes, the climbers began making their way down the spire to the viewing platform, which appears to have been evacuated.
As the couple reached a platform at the base of the spire, Beerkus dropped down on one knee and proposed to Nikolau — who was wearing a black cat mask — with a ring that she later flaunted on Instagram.
The couple, who live in East Orange, New Jersey, was taken into custody upon reaching the ground and later charged with felony burglary, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, as well as misdemeanor raps of possession of burglar’s tools and criminal trespass. The pair was awaiting arraignment late Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear if they bought tickets to access the observation deck. But a source familiar told The Post the duo allegedly breached a mesh gate on the 102nd floor — the highest publicly accessible story — to reach the 103rd floor, which is exclusively used for maintenance.
Angela Nikolau (left) and her boyfriend Ivan Beerkus (right) reportedly climbed to the top of the Empire State building Wednesday. Instagram/@angela_nikolauThe mesh gate and other security measures were recently installed in the stairwell between the 102nd and 103rd floors following previous attempts by trespassers to take selfies near the spire, according to sources.
An Empire State Building spokesperson told The Post, in part: “The unauthorized incident at the building has been resolved with the constructive and helpful coordination of the NYPD. There was at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and Empire State Building Observation Deck guests.” But the spokesperson didn’t respond to queries regarding security upgrades on the 103rd floor.
Shocking bodycam footage captured the moment the daring duo was caught scaling the landmark.
“Hey I got eyes on ‘em,” an NYPD officer can be heard saying in the video while climbing toward the lovebirds.
“How you doing? You can’t be up here!”
“I’m OK,” responded Nikolau, before being taken into custody. Ahmed Hassan, 46, a hot dog vendor who works nearby, told the Post that he’d “never seen anything like it.”
“Everyone stopped walking and started pointing up,” he said, adding that passersby “were buying hot dogs just so they had an excuse to stand around and watch.”

Instagram/@angela_nikolauThe couple looked like a “tiny black dot,” according to witness Jasmine Chen, 27, who was initially quite concerned about the stunt.
“Was it terrorism? Was it a protest?” she recalled wondering. “But then I started hearing ‘marriage proposal,’ and someone showed me on Instagram the guy on one knee.
“I thought it was actually incredibly romantic in this over-the-top way,” she said. “I wouldn’t mind a proposal like that.”
A jaw-dropping POV-style footage of their vantage from the top of the Empire State building was posted on Nikolau’s Instagram account. Instagram/@angela_nikolauOthers were less impressed. “Maybe I’m just getting old, but I don’t really get it,” said 54-year-old Tom Loughran.
“Everybody around me was cheering when they found out it was a proposal, and I was thinking, ‘Really?’ he said. “Is this what love is now, a performance?
“My wife and I got engaged in her parents’ living room. Nobody filmed it, and we’re still together 28 years later”
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the cops who arrested the climbers, as she posted the footage of the bust on social media. “A glimpse into the work of our Emergency Services Unit,” she wrote. “God bless these officers.”
Jaw-dropping POV-style footage of the pair’s vantage from the top of the Empire State Building was also posted on Nikolau’s Instagram page, who describes herself as a “neoartist exploring identity, fear & freedom.”
Nikolau, 33 — who describes herself as a “neoartist exploring identify, fear & freedom” — posed atop the Empire State Building. Instagram/@angela_nikolauMany of the photos on her page feature her with Beerkus — presumably the man she climbed the building with in Wednesday’s stunt — atop several other world-renowned tall structures, including the Bay Bridge in San Francisco and Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur — the world’s second-tallest building.
The couple were the subjects of a 2024 Netflix documentary, “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year.
The stunt wasn’t the first time someone has ascended to the top of the structure.
French climber Alain Robert, known as “French Spider-Man,” free-climbed the building with bare hands and feet in 1994, in what was also an illegal feat, according to Guinness World Records. He has been arrested several times over his climbs.
