can i create offset alignment using polylines

Hi,
need help, im new user of Civil 3D, i used to work with Autocad.  i draw an alignment and offset alignment using polyline, and create alignment from object (i click the polyline alignment). then i create offset alignment from object (i click the offset alignment that i draw using polyline) and change the type into offset alignment, including the curb return. then i click the profile view, its just blank, no elevation lines are shown.
whether the steps I have taken are correct or something is wrong, because the width of the road for each station is different, and if using the offset alignment command, the width of the road does not match the existing conditions..
