DEC issues air quality advisory through Thursday

Genesee County is expected to be in the red zone through midnight Thursday, the state Department of Environmental Conservation says.Red signals an unhealthy air quality and advisory to limit your outdoor exposure when possible. The advisory is effective from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., a DEC air quality health advisory stated. Areas affected include Western and Central New York, Eastern Lake Ontario, Adirondacks, Upper and Lower Hudson, New York City Metro, and Long Island.The index values for air quality are listed between 151 to 200 for this region, which is considered “unhealthy.” Some members of the general public may experience negative health effects, and members of sensitive groups — including children, teens, the elderly, pregnant people, those with lung or heart conditions, asthmatics, and people that exercise or work outdoors — may experience more serious health effects, DEC said.“Everyone should reduce long or intense outdoor activities. Take more breaks,” the agency said. “Sensitive groups should move activities indoors or reschedule outdoor events for another day. If outdoor activity is unavoidable, take frequent breaks and move indoors (to air conditioning or go to a cooling center) if symptoms occur.”To check for daily air quality values, go HERE or call the NYS Air Quality Hotline at 1-800-535-1345.
