San Diego Venezuelans rally to help after deadly Venezuela earthquakes

Дата публикации: 27-06-2026 13:11:34

Casa de Venezuela San Diego is leading a relief effort to support victims of the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, as the death toll has surpassed 1,400 people as of Saturday at noon. More than 3,000 people have been injured, and thousands remain missing.
The local organization is collecting medical supplies and monetary donations to help those affected as Venezuelans in San Diego work to get aid to their home country.
Criseida Werdenberg, president of Casa de Venezuela San Diego, said the disaster has deeply affected Venezuelans living abroad.
“I’m overwhelmed at this moment with all the things of what my country is going through.”
Werdenberg said many Venezuelans feel compelled to help despite being far from home.
“This is a feeling that I think every Venezuelan around the world is feeling this moment. It’s something really hard because also we have to still pretend and go with our daily life.”
She said getting assistance into Venezuela is urgent but challenging.
“We are, had been in a decline of all of our infrastructure for the last 28 years under this nightmare of, of government or dictatorships that we have had.”
Werdenberg also said aid has faced obstacles from Venezuelan government.
“They are not allowing this help. The, all this, the material that is needed if it is coming from opposition,”
She said the country’s health care system has struggled to respond to the disaster, increasing the need for medical supplies and immediate financial support.
“There are no means for hospitals to really take care of patients. So the community had [to] band together and have supplied the hospitals the best they can.”
Despite the hardships, Werdenberg said Venezuelans remain hopeful and resilient.
When asked where that optimism comes from, she said:
“That is genetically. We, we are raised that way. And again, I can know something, that’s something that I cannot explain. But that’s certainly is part of our culture. That’s part of what we Venezuelans are. We overcome difficulties and we will overcome this to with the help of all the community.”
People in San Diego can donate supplies through 7 p.m. Saturday. The donation drive will continue Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. next to Encuentro Café in Old Town. Monetary donations can also be made through Casa De Venezuela’s website here.
